3rd GRADE BURN

I’ve been burnt by life. On more than one occasion. It has left scars. 3rd GRADE BURN doesn’t. Anders Ekdahl ©2017

How important is the band’s name in giving out the right kind of vibe?
-A name should subscribe what a band is. When you hear the name Metallica you know “oh it´s a metal band”.
Thats what we tried to represent with “3rd grade burn”.
We imagine a fire roller and hard rolling music.

I wanted to start a band in the 80s but couldn’t fin d the right people to do so with. What was it that made you want to do the band?
-I always loved music and someday I started playing guitar so the next step was to play in a band. I realised that my guitar game is more groove oriantated so a groove-matal band seemed the right thing for me.
To find the right peaople is a hard way. But Falk was there since the beginning of my life as a musician. Gregor joined the band more as a coincidence. We knew each other from other bands and as he had a break at doing music
I asked him to join.
I although want to keep our band as a trio. It´s more easy to work with and matching events for practicing or concerts.

With so many genres and sub-genres of metal today what is your definition of the music you play?
-I count our music to the nu-metal genre. We call it full-bearded-groove-matal 🙂 You´ll find influences of bands like Korn, Sepultura, Ektomorf, etc..
If you like them you´ll love us.

How do you arrange the tracks? Is there a method to how you arrange the songs on a record?
-Normaly I bring a Riff to the dudes and then we start to buildt a song. It takes how long it takes, till everybody is fine with the song.
The songs are growing in the band. Sometimes it takes a few minutes to arrange a song sometimes weeks.

I am fascinated by how people can still come up with things that hasn’t been done before, chord structures that hasn’t been written, sentences that hasn’t been constructed before. Where do you find your inspiration to create?
-In my oppinion in these times it is really hard to create something total new. Today it´s more a sound thing. You here our influences and we don`t mean that we can invent the wheel new. We try to mix up our music
with modern Synths and sounds to get an own sound and style of music. In the end it´s pure nu-metal and we´re loving it to be a part of this genre

How important is the graphic side of the band? How much thought goes into art work etc.?
-Oh, the graphic side is really important for me. All graphics are done by Falk and it took a looong time till everybody in the band was ok with it.
I think, when you hold an album in your hands you have to see what music is inside.
When you look at our album you will not think that there is a modern girlband inside.

I get the feeling that more and more metalheads too are just downloading single tracks. Is the album as relevant today as it was in the 70s and 80s? Is digital killing the album?
-Yeah youre right. For me I love to get a physical album and hear the whole thing. There are so many songs on albums which you realized first when you had heard the album 10 times or more.
When you only download the hit from an album you´ll pass the really great songs and the evolution of music. We as a band make a big a head about where we put a song an the album. We try to make a whole one piece of all songs.
The product is the full album not only one song.
But maybe thats the future. You get what you want as fast as possible and don´t take time to rest and listen.

Are we killing our beloved metal scene by supporting digital downloading or can anything positive come from supporting single tracks and not albums? Will the fan as we know him/her be gone soon?
-In my oppinion the good thing is that you hear a song and if you like it you go on and get the album. The bad thing is maybe you hear every song for just 10 seconds and then you switch to the next.
I don´t know what the future will bring but I think the download thing will grow. Everything is going faster and faster I thing the same will happen with the use of music hearing.

Is there a scene to speak of for a band like yours? Where do you fit in?
-We don´t have a typical scene. We play loud and we play groovey so that anybody can find a piece of what he likes. We don´t have a political message or something like this in our songs. We just want to make good rock music.
Even if you dont´t are a fan of our style, come to the show and get a blast no matter if you where black or pink clothes.
What does the future hold?
-We are working at our second album. We are looking forward to get to the studio at summer 2018.
In addition to this we want to play more and bigger shows.
We´ll see what the future hold for us.
The main thing is that we´re going on to love what we do.
Horns up!!!
