Sometime you come upon a label that turns out be special to you. Like Sentient Ruin did for me- ABATON is one of the cool bands on said label. Anders Ekdahl ©2016
1. Could you please introduce the band to us?
-The project Abaton was founded in 2009 with the specific intent to create something meaningful from the synthesis of individual elements that compose it. Each with a specific background and unique but in all the rest gives a distinct personality to the band.
When you form how easy is it to pick up a thread as to where your sound is going?
-It wasn’t simple, it was a long personal journey. When we recorded the albums the sound was what we wanted everytime, don’t know if will be the same sound of the next album, probably not.
How do you explain the meaning of the band name?
-The literal meaning of the word “Abaton” is “inaccessible”. What we try to convey is the exact opposite of this meaning. We attempt, in fact, to create an atmosphere in which the listener has an opportunity to transcend himself and to observe reality from a higher point of view, almost ethereal, so as to understand the shallowness of human conditions
How important is image to the band? What impression do you want the fans to get of the band?
-The show for us is an essential part, we always try to combine music with some kind of visual on the stage, here too there have been developments and changes and we believe the actually form it’s the best.
Good question, we want our public, in the foreground, will be emotionally involved. doesn’t matter which emotions grow up, it’s important that you feel something.
I am a huge fan of LP art work. How important is it to have the right art work for your album?
-It’s essential, so much so that the graphic is the same concept of the album itself, the graphics have been made by Alessandro, our friend and local artist. The whole layout was done by us just to make more explicit the meaning on paper.
How do you avoid being affected by the hype likes on youtube and facebook can create on social media?
-We use social networks the minimum necessary to have contact with fans, sell merch and publish music online. Unfortunately nowadays reach more like it has become a goal, but an important goal for us is that in a concert a fan compliments with us, buy some merch and have fun with us
When you play in a metal band does it feel like you are a part of massive community?
-Absolutely yes, for us is a big family that grows every time we have the chance to play or meet other bands and promoters
How important is it to be signed to label today? What can they do that you cannot so on your own?
-We think it depend on how much is DIY the spirit of a band, how much effort has to put in it. For sure, having the ability to have good labels it’s possible have more opportunities, more distribution, more gigs, more festivals, more advertising. We try to do our best like organizing tours and as recently autoproduction .
How much of a touring band are you guys? How hard is it to get gigs outside of your borders?
What will the future bring?
-For us is much more easy and funny to find gig out of border. The reality in Italy for doom\sludge it’s difficult. Abroad it is all simpler and more organized, better promotion for the new artists while. In Italy it is more difficult to fit, even though there are some good local people.
What lies in the future?
-We hope a lot of concerts, many new friendships and reinforcement of old, new songs and definitely new opportunities and collaborations.
