German death metal isn’t the most common thing yet we’ve been given bands like Morgoth and Fleshcrawl. And now ABROGATION. So there are still some cool German death metal bands to discover. Anders Ekdahl ©2016
As you might not be that known to most people a short introduction might be in order.
-Abrogation are a melodic death metal band from Germany, founded in 1997. We think we have the good old spirit what fans call „old shool“ featured with German vocals which makes our music a bit unique. Started with 2 EPs in 1997 and 1998 with English vocals, our first full length album „Handwerk des Todes“ was released in 1999 with 100% german vocals. At this time, the style of Abrogation was born in our opinion. Followed by „das Blut der Toten“(2002), „1487“(2005), „Sarggeburt“(2009) and „tief schwarz blutig rot“(2011) we are going to release our 6th full length studio album in 2016, which will be something special. In 2013 our vocalist and guitarist decided to leave Abrogation. The new album „Urstant“ will be the first album with our new singer „Fenris“.
How does your latest recording compare to the previous ones?
-The new material is more song orientated in comparison to past albums. This comes why „Poldi“, our guitarist has written all songs this time, except of some text. At the end it makes the hole record very compact sounding which we like very well. Also the recording process was more song orientated, so we tried to make not so much overdubbing, except the 2nd rhythm guitar which has to be played by Poldi, too.
Was it hard for you to come up with a sound you all could agree on?
-No, this time it was an easy part. We want sound compact and organic, so we mixed the drum for example as much natural as possible for a metal record. At the end it sounds like Abrogation, no idea why…
How important are the lyrics to you? What kind of topics do you deal with?
-The lyrics are the most important part. That’s why they are in German language what we speak native and where we are able to say things, we could not say with our school English J
Starting with songs about the good old middle age, today our lyrics are also about things that are actual today but with an syntax that allows only things, the middle age had allowed in our opinion. So we avoid modernism oder firearm and stuff like that.
How important is the cover art work for you? How much do you decide in choosing art work?
-We think there is nothing unimportant when you make a record with all the energy you have. The cover is very different to all other Abrogation records. „Urstant“ means among others a new beginning, which brought us to the decision to create an complete different artwork.
Where outside of your country have you had success?
-In our experience there is no change. attributable to the German language we haven’t great international attention so far. We played some gigs in Austria and Switzerland because they speak german too.
Is it harder today to get noticed both nationally and internationally than it was 10 or 20 years ago? Is the competition tougher today?
-In the last years there were more feedbacks from oversea, which is because of facebook and co. we think, so we can say that the options to get noticed are better. On the other hand you have tons of bands wich comes with more or less good music so it is much harder for listeners to find what he is searching for and it is impossible to notice all.
What is your local scene like? What status does your band have in the national scene?
-In the German metal scene i think we are well known in the underground. We have played a lot of gigs on different underground festivals like „Barther Metal Open Air“, „Riedfest“, „Protzen Open Air“, „Metal Embrace“, „Eisenwahn“… In 2011, we played at Wacken Metal Marked.
What is the general population’s opinion on playing music? Is being a musician a respectable choice?
None of us has decided to be a professional musician, so that’s not easy to say. For us this is a very well alternation to our main jobs and we put a lot of energy into it. As reaction to our albums and concert we have a lot of positive and enthusiastic feedback so we think that we are respected in what we are doing.
What does the future hold for you?
-A lot of albums and concerts we hope! In a few days we will release our new video „deine Wunden“ which was made with the help of a good friend. Over the years we will play some festival shows and we hope to play more next year. If the force be with us we will write some new material within this year, so stay tuned and check out „Urstant“ – comming on 29.04.2016. Thanks a lot!
