AIRFORCE

AIRFORCE is one of these classic NWOBHM bands that didn’t really make it, until now. Answers by Tony Hatton Anders Ekdahl ©2018

We all come into music with our own baggage. We want different things from the music. How does the vision you had for the band when you started compare to the vision you have for the band today? What is this band really all about? What do you want with your music?
-Airforce were first formed around 1987 by Chop Pitman, Tony Hatton & Doug Sampson ( ex-Iron Maiden drummer), and had a vision to create great original metal.
This original musical line up unfortunately disbanded in 1990, after struggling to break through back then.
The original musical Line up reformed two years ago after Maiden fans tracked us down and inspired us to reform.
The vision remains today as it was back then, to create great original classic metal, and this time around Airforce are breaking through and spreading the Airforce metal vision around the world.
Airforce have unfinished metal business to pursue.

Is there a difference in people’s attitude towards you if you don’t come from a cool place like LA or NY or London?
-Airforce do hail from London, East London to be precise, the same area as our friends Iron Maiden came from.

When you release an album that get pretty good feedback, how do you follow up on that? How important is that I as a fan can identify album to album?
-Very Important.
Airforce have only released one Album, “Judgement Day” This is a retrospective look back at Airforce’s career over many years with different Airforce Line ups.
Airforce since reforming have released two EP’s the Black Box Recordings, Volume 1 (2017), & Volume 2 (2018).
We are in the process of recording a new Album for release in the Spring of 2019.
Airforce strive to make each release a special event, with each a unique piece of work, with its own identity.

What is the biggest challenge in the creation of an album? How do you write the really cool songs?
-Having the inspiration for new and original ideas.
Fortunately Airforce have both inspiration & creativity and ideas abound, inspiration bounces between us all, the songs just come to us.

I saw Dave Grohl’s documentary about Sound City and it made me wonder what it is about analogue recording that you don’t get with digital? Have you ever recorded analogue?
-Our early recordings are analogue and are included on the “Judgement Day” Album.
With great songs, recording in Analogue or Digital doesn’t really matter as the musical content is the real key.
Great music shines through however it is recorded or performed.

What is it like to sit there with a finished album? Do you think much what people will think of it?
-It’s fantastic every time a new song is written by Airforce.
When you have enough songs they can be released as an Album.
If we work at our best we know people will like it, so far so good up to now.

How important are the lyrics and what message do you want to purvey?
-It’s important to Airforce that the lyrics tell a story.
We don’t like to over complicate our lyrics but we like a story to be told, whether the lyrics are based on an event or are totally fictional.

Ever since I first got into metal the art work has been a main motivator in buying a record. What part does art work for album covers play in the world of the band?
-The artwork is most important.
Impressive artwork give the music and Airforce an identity.
We pride ourselves on the artwork of Airforce, and thank some good friends for helping in this department, especially our special Airforce friend, artist Baz Crowcroft

When you play live do you notice a degree of greater recognition from the fans with each new time you pass through town?
-Once Airforce play live in a venue it gets noticed, with more fans coming along each successive time.
So much so that Airforce recently flew back to North Carolina USA in October 2018, by popular demand, for one night only to play a return Show at the Rock House in Gastonia, after playing there in April 2018 as part of an American tour.
Airforce will return to the USA for a second tour in April 2019.
There will be European live shows for Airforce in March 2019, two dates in Poland have just been confirmed.

What do you see in the future?
-Airforce will just keep on keeping on, playing, writing, recording and producing the best metal music we can for the metal fans for as long as we are able to.

AIRFORCE are; Chop Pitman (Guitars), Doug Sampson (Drums), Tony Hatton (Bass Guitar) & Current Vocalist Ivan Gianini.
