In picking your band name you have to consider a hell of a lot of things so why not just use your surname, like ANGARTHAL’s done. Anders Ekdahl ©2016

How hard was it to come up with a band name and how does the name fit the music?
-Nowadays to find a band name could be really demanding!..but this time for me wasn’t that hard: The preceding solo project was called Dragon’s Cave and I was feeling like it didn’t hit the core of the music I was presenting, so, realizing this was actually still a solo project and at the same time my name was more unique I decided to shift to the name ANGARTHAL. It doesn’t confine the music strictly to Fantasy world so the listener can still have some curiosity on the project even if he/she is not into the world of dungeons and dragons!

As I am new to your band perhaps a short introduction might be in order?
-As I was saying before Angarthal is the evolution of my last project called Dragon’s Cave: the intention was to bring the sound of original Heavy Metal music and its Epic flavours back to life through my own personal vision. The Drummer Luca Saja is coming from the preceding live shows with DC, while all other guests are close friend of mine who I really estimate as musicians! The live line up sees Angelo Perini on bass and young keyboardist Andrea Bevilacqua who I acknowledged a few months ago.

As I am no musician I have no idea how it works, but how do you make your own music based on what influences you? What parts do you pick?
-There isn’t always the same recipe, but what is the most important thing I learned through the years is being able to know when the magic is flowing; so when those moments come, I find whatever means to catch that music, wheter it is writing a score or recording on the telephone, the main thing is having a canvas on which I can rely to start with. There have been songs written and produced in a few hours sometimes, and some other times I go through long process of shape the right arrangements and parts!

When you are in a band does it feel lkke you are a part of a worldwide movement?
-Maybe a before the new millennium I could feel like that, Today I feel like I belong to a small tribe of mad men treading a sick world….sometimes we stray and sometimes we feel like we’re close to Heaven!

How important is it that you look the part in promo shots and stuff? How important is the graphic side of the band?
-Today graphics and communications seems to overcome the weight of musical content, so you have yield to the rule that we are what we appear and try to do your best!

What would you say influences your lyrics? How important are they?
-Lyrics may come as soon as the music is born, expecially when that music is embedded with a particular image in my mind or maybe is just the things I want to talk about that carry with them the music…I find them always strictly related because, if sounds and words are coherent you can have a stronger impact on the listener! So , to me, is not just that I have to fill the mouth with some words, but it has to be poetry and music flowing!

Is the album as relevant today as it was in the 70s and 80s? Is digital killing the album?
-It’s definitely that we’re over a golden age for music: the funny thing is that digital technology gives better ways of managing music and communications but at the same time made people lose the important role of music in our lies: music is not something to fill your empty or lonely moments of life, music is a way to enlighten our bodies and soul by means of getting carried away by it! I personally hate the usage of background music in shops and restaurants because the tend to saturate people’s ears and when the time for active music listening comes your ears can’t stand anymore sounds around!…I think that we should learn to appreciate silence more!

Where will the future of format end – digital verses physical verses whatever?
-I think liquid music will prevail, but that will still be music lovers who will still cherish having their physical support (vinyl or cd)

How much of a touring entity are you guys? What is a live experiencevwith you like?
-Live shows are intended to be faithful to the old rock n roll attitude where you have to sweat your energy out and enter a kind of estatic mood where everything may happen! I don’t mind if sometimes there may be errors in the performance as long as the vibe is high that’s fine for me! The possibility to play live more And more shows gives the band the chance to a higher accuracy of all the details. Today a metal band is not having an easy way to do this but we’re giving it a try!

What lies in the future?
-Angarthal feature a hard rock band and lots of orchestral work, I hope to be able to make this happen in a live situation, I know it’s really bold but I’m looking forward to make this happen and let this project grow on and on! In the meantime I take the opportunity to invite Battle Helm readers to listen to our work “Uranus and Gaia” and follow the project if they like it! Music is light even if it’s dark she will be guiding you to better shores!
