ASHES COLLIDE is a band that I found to be really interesting so I had to interview them. Anders Ekdahl ©2018
What kind of vision did you have when you started and how has it changed over the years?
-Musically, we do not have a clear vision. Our music is constantly transformed, as our musicians listen to different music. Doing music for us is something that we can’t do without. So, ever since we started, we want to be successful in order to make music a main thing in our lives.
Does location mean anything today? We used to hear about how it was all location, location, location back in the days if you wanted to make it big?
– That you had to come from a certain place to be sure to make it. Location is important even now, in a globalized world. At least, location has a strong effect on logistics. Also, musicians are influenced by the culture in which they are located. And this affects the popularity of the artist in different places.
What is it like to be a in a band and to get to tour all over the world? What kind of feelings do that bring about?
-Being a band for us is the combination of several cool things into one: favorite work, communication with interesting people and traveling. Being a band is also almost the same as being a family – when you have so many common experiences that you become something one.
What kind of feedback have you had on your music, your latest album and in general? How important is feedback?
-We get a lot of positive reactions and feedbacks both to our music in general, and to our new album. But most of all good reviews we get after our live performances, when the audience feels our energy. And it’s very cool! Feedback helps us to think about how to improve our music, but it’s never decisive. We want to go our own way.
How do you know that you have written a “hit” song? Is there a particular feeling you get when you know that this is the one, this is the big “make it song”?
-Usually, the musicians can’t independently know that they have written a “hit” song. A masterpiece from the point of view of a musician can mean almost nothing to an ordinary listener. So, we can understand this only from the feedback or reaction of our listeners.
As I am no musician I will never got to know the difference of analogue and digital. Can you explain the difference to me? what are the pros and cons of analogue V/S digital?
-It is believed that the analog sound is softer and more pleasing to the human ear. Today there are few people who love the analog sound. But with technological development, this border is erased. A high-quality digital sound is close to analog sound. In any case, the future is for digital technologies. With their help, almost everyone can make music.
What is it like to have people you never met liking your music and singing along to it at gigs?
– This is probably one of the best feelings that we can experience. This is a powerful charge of inspiration and energy, when you realize that in other cities and countries there are the same people who love the same thing you do. We think that this is the most important thing, why do musicians do what they do.
How important are lyrics to you guys? Do you have any messages that you want to get forward?
-The lyrics are very important for us. With the help of our songs, we want to tell our listeners about things that we do not notice in ordinary life. We often forget about how cool it is to think, feel, dream, doubt – about all the simple things that make you alive. And our songs remind our listeners about it.
I love a really cool cover but I get the feeling that today with all this digital uploading/downloading people aren’t that concerned about artwork. How do you feel? *
-I think that people who love the music are interested in other things related to it: band, its members and also artwork. And it doesn’t matter whether they buy records or download it in digital stores. Therefore, we pay close attention to our artworks. By the way, people often see artworks in digital stores, in the news on the net, so art design remains an important part of music.
What does the future hold?
-The future of the modern music market is unpredictable. But we have a great desire to succeed, that’s why we see ourselves as a successful band with a lot of fans around the world.
