With so many cool bands out there to check out I offer you some minor guidance by introducing you to ATTIKA. Anders Ekdahl ©2018
We all come into music with our own baggage. We want different things from the music. How does the vision you had for the band when you started compare to the vision you have for the band today?
-Great question, originally, we just wanted someones attention. I think the band still has the same philosophy. . What is this band really all about? We are about Rock n Roll. We lean more on spiritual and faith. I like to tell stories. either fictional or historic. Sometimes just a personal view of wehat I see in the world.. What do you want with your music? Money ..LOL.. We want people to notice, get involved, talk about it, etc. More importantly is that they enjoy it and tell their friends
Is there a difference in people’s attitude towards you if you don’t come from a cool place like LA or NY or London?
-30 years ago yes.. Today not so much. The world is abundant in talent and bands that want to make their mark.
When you release an album that get pretty good feedback, how do you follow up on that?
-If you are asking how do we handle the positive attention, we relish it. We do not take for granted that someone took time to listen and tell the world their opinion. How important is that I as a fan can identify album to album? I think its important. I believe that every band wants a fans attention so much so that they continue to buy more music in the future.
What is the biggest challenge in the creation of an album?
-Nowadays its finding time to write and record. We have to balance ” work” life with family life and still find time to do what we do with Attika How do you write the really cool songs? We mostly write collectively, Bill or I have an idea, then we throw different ideas on top until it sounds like something we would listen to . That a metal fan would engage in.
I saw Dave Grohl’s documentary about Sound City and it made me wonder what it is about analogue recording that you don’t get with digital?
-After using both digital and analog, I think with analog you have to be better prepared. possibly even a better player. With digital, if you get a line down and you miss the next, you just delete and click and drag. It saves time, which is money Have you ever recorded analogue? Funny, I am so old that all that was available was analog. our first cd was made with 1/2 tape. The Heroes cd was made with 2″ tape.
What is it like to sit there with a finished album?
-For me its like looking at a painting afeter its completed, or a marathon you ran and completed. Its a feeling of accomplishment, with a little pride thrown in. It just feels good !!!Do you think much what people will think of it? I do to an extent. Everyone has opinions and I use the good and the bad to learn from.
How important are the lyrics and what message do you want to purvey?
-The lyrics and story have always been a major part of Attika. They continue to be as well. What good is metal without a message, or attitude..?
Ever since I first got into metal the art work has been a main motivator in buying a record. What part does art work for album covers play in the world of the band?
-I feel the same. For a band it becomes more of a business choice. it needs to capture the potential fan visually. It should relate to the music or lyrics as well. In fact, We are pleased that Pure Steel Records has decided to use the original art that Joe the guitarist created. We thought it represented the music more than the cover Massacre provided.
When you play live do you notice a degree of greater recognition from the fans with each new time you pass through town?
-More so than 20 years ago. We are blessed to have played Up the Hammers. Something we never believed we would achieve. That show catapulted us on a local level in Florida and overseas. We are getting more positive response from fans now and they continue to grow. Fans of all ages too. They are not just the old guys LOL..
What do you see in the future?
-Currently, we are preparing the new music for our next cd called Metal lands. I see us a lot busier.
