This week I am doing a Inverse Records interview special. If you haven’t checked out the quality metal this Finnish label brings us now is the time. I present to you B LACK DREAMS. Anders Ekdahl ©2017
Every band has to introduce their music to new people. What is it that you want people to get from listening to you guys?
“We are a combination of something old and something brand new stuff. Of course we love old school bands like Black Sabbath and Danzig but we definitely won´t sound just like them. There might be some familiar parts or sections in our songs but also something different and totally out of the box. You have to take listen and figure it out by yourself!”
How hard was it for you guys to pick a name? What had that name have to have to fit your music?
“The name of the band is stolen from the band called Samhain. They have a song called Black Dream and we just took it. If someone knows the band Samhain they probably will notice this connection. And the others, they just might think we got our name from some xxx porn site :)”
Everybody is influenced by certain things. What band(s) was it that turned you on to the kind of music you play? What inspires you today?
“We love all kind of rock and metal music, mostly the 80`s and 90`s old school stuff. I originally thought we will be a gothic metal band like Moonspell and Sentenced but soon after we found our bluesy solo guitarist and our rhythm guitarist who also plays in the surf rock bands we found out that we are more like a blues-driven heavy metal band. I picked up earlier the names of Danzig and Black Sabbath, if you like these bands maybe you can find something interested from our songs. Heavy and catchy guitar riffs, clean vocals and blues-style guitar solos with dark, rough and sometimes pretty twisted lyrics, this is what we are.”
When you formed did you do so with the intent of knowing what to play or did you do so from the point of having a band name and then picking a sound? How did you settle on the name/sound combo?
“Check out the number 3. My earlier band Discipline X was a crossover thrash band and it was fun time to play so fast and lunatic music but in Finland it was too hard to find venues to play because this kind of music is so underground here. So I decided that the next band will be more popular and easier stuff to sell to the audience. It was a good decision because the new band Black Dreams has gotten much more airplay around the world and better gigs than my earlier band.”
I believe that digital is killing the album format. People’s changing habit of how they listen to music will result in there being no albums. Is there anything good with releasing single tracks only?
“Yes. We are saving money because we don`t have to pay the physical copies. But anyway we are planning to record a full album next so don`t worry.”
What part does art-work and lay-out play when you release new recordings? How do you best catch people’s attention?
“Some people say we are a hard rock band. And maybe this is the truth, we re not the heaviest or the fastest band in the planet. But bad ass lyrics and art-work will tell the people we have an attitude and edge enough to be something else than just an average hard rock band. So the art-work will show the way we are going and what we are.”
Has social media re-written the rules on how to promote your music? Or do you go about doing promotion the same way?
“This band has existed only in social media time so we can live with it.”
When you play in a band, does that make you feel like you are a part of a scene, of something bigger and grander?
“Sometimes I feel that everyone has a band. I guess my grandmom has a band in her garage. So in nowadays it ain`t a big deal to play in band. A great way to spend your time though and to me and my band mates it is the way of living.”
How much of a touring band are you? Is touring/gigging still a great way of spreading the word of the band?
“We had 4 gigs in the Eastern Europe in May and here in Finland we use to play short tours. I think we want to make tours and play live gigs. It is the way we have a connection with our audience and we love to be on stage. Drinking beer in the dressing room and things like that, you know what I mean?”
What will the future bring?
“The future will bring a full album of Black Dreams songs. It will include a previously released singles but also 5 – 6 brand new tracks. We just had a discussion about to record some cover song and put that also to the album. Let`s see what is happening. We are not a punk rock band but somehow we have played some punk rock covers on stage including Holiday in Cambodia by DK and London Dungeon by Misfits. And we are selling gigs right now so I guess the Finnish people will see Black Dreams on stage during the next months. Oh and I almost forgot the music video we are shooting right now. You are so beautiful (when you are dead and cold) Official Music Video is coming soon. Beware!”
