BLACK SUNDAY

A strange beast but nonetheless an interesting beast in the shape of BLACK SUNDAY. Answers by Tricky T. Anders Ekdahl ©2018

When the band came into creation what was the main purpose for it?
-Hi Battle helm mag!
Well,it really depends on how u see it!
The first Black sunday record came alive in 2015 after the band split up and Tricky T decided to do everything on his own and do more kind of hardrock style music.
Back in 2010 we called the band Psychotic Pain and we split up a couple of years later, then Tricky T used some of the old songs and changed the name and then the oneman band Black sunday was born around 2013-14.
And then, back to your question..Our main purpose with Black sunday was ,and still is, to make as good, catchy hardrock songs as possible!

How hard is it to come up with a sound that is all yours? What bits’n’pieces do you pick up from other stuff to make it your sound?
-Hmm It is probably not possible!hehe. But of course it is possible to get your own sound but it will anyway be compared to something else, to be 100 % original today is very very difficult.
That is not Black Sundays mission at all ,we just do what we like and there is a lot of metal and punk in our music as well.
Many people tells us that we sound like the Norwegian band Turbonegro, but thats fine,it`s a great band!
But I don`t write music to copy Turbonegro.
And somebody mention Kiss,Ramones and that is fine too,I think people always wants to compare your music to someone or something.
When I write songs I just look after great melodies,I don`t care if I make it on guitar, piano or whatever.A good melody is a good melody!
And that is important to Black sunday,we don`t want any fillers.

I have no idea what kind of creative process you guys go through but how hard is it to record and release new songs?
-It`s of course a lot of work and hours, hours of recording…, we get really bad paid!haha
But it is still a lot of fun, being in a creative mood and write and recording songs is like a obsession and a curse..

Today technology allows you to record at home and release your music digitally. But in doing so is there a risk that you release only single songs because that is what is demanded to stay atop and therefore you end up killing the album for example?
-Yeah the pop music is already getting down that road, that`s for sure.Releasing only single hit songs and then suddenly they are playing concerts,it`s ridiculous!I got one song and it became a hit, let`s play some gigs!
I still think, at least in the rock and metal scene that the album will survive.Metal and rock fans wants an album, not just a song every 6 month.

I for one feel that the change in how people listen to music today, by downloading it and expecting to get it for free, will kill music as we know it. What kind of future is there for music?
-The future is digitally, thats for sure.Do the new generation buy cds anymore?
I know that LP format is doing some comeback these days and thats cool, but the total amount of physical music is in a down hill.
As a teenager I remember getting some money from my parents and went in to Oslo to buy some music.I only got enough money to buy like 2 cds, but I wanted 3 or 4!That was tough one!Now you don’t have to pick, you can listen to it for free..You don’t even need to leave your house!
And it doesn’t seems like it is killing the business either, but playing live is more and more important, that`s were the money is (Hopefully)
But sadly the new generation misses the feeling about holding a physical release in their hand, the smell og paper, the band photo, the lyrics etc.

What kind of responses do you get to your music? What has been the thing that has gotten the most attention?
-We got great respons from people hearing our music! They think its really good catchy hardrock with a singalong, well memorable chorus.
From our first album A ghost in the city we definitely got best respons to the song Are you ready?! and the classic Hey bitch! but in my opinion, that record was a great one ,but sadly hardly anyone got to know it…That`s a shame.
At that time we did no gigs and no promotion and that record deserved better.
We actually did play Hey bitch live back then we called us Psychotic Pain and it was always a live classic and we really hope it will be so again!
From the new record we hope to get some attention from the first single and title track Backyard freaks ,and actually today the music video for the song Superstar hero got finished. It was a lot of work but it became really good!
Can`t wait to get I released, but that`s up to Mighty music to decide when.
But keep your eyes open for that one!

We live in a world where there are no real distances between people communicating anymore. What has been the most surprising contact so far?
-If you mean in music context it hasn’t been any big surprises yet.As I mentioned earlier there were hardly any promotion for the first record but we got some mails from people “eager”helping us out but we turned down most of it.
Hopefully we will get some more attention about the new record when we are signed to Mighty music.
But we get som emails from around the world and that`s always cool 🙂

Does playing in a band make you feel like you are a part of a greater community? What has music brought with it that you would have otherwise missed out on?
-Not really,I have always played music or in bands.
But have to say Black sunday is my first Hardrock band, I have always played in more Extreme metal bands. But then I have to say,it`s so much more fun to play in a Hardrock band!

What is the live scene like for you? Do you feel that playing live helps building a bigger following?
-Definitely!Thats what Black sunday are about, playing live! This music is intended to play live! That is why we are back as a 4 piece band and hopefully we will hit the stage in a few months.
I dont think the record justifies the songs, they are written to be performed live.Come see us and we will show you what we mean !
We can’t wait for people to singalong with songs like Are you ready!?,Monsters and diamonds,Superstar hero and many more!

What plans do you have for the future?
-We got plans, thats for sure!First of all,we are currently rehearsing a setlist for upcoming gigs and it sounds great!
That is a good mix of songs from A ghost in the city and the new one Backyard freaks
We have already begun to think about new songs and maybe we will do something different next time…Something darker perhaps, something heavy…..Or maybe going even more commercial, what about a ballad?heheh
Thanx for the interview!
