You all should know who BRIAN SLAGEL is. If you don’t I feel sorry for you. With his small label Metal Blade Records he’s brought us quality metal for three decades now. Anders Ekdahl ©2017
What pressure is there in releasing an album for a company? Do you feel that there is a pressure to succeed when you release albums?
-Yes always. I think there is pressure to put out something the fans will like and also to make it as successful as we can.
When you have a band that you believe in what kind of expectations do you have on it? What kind of goals do you set up for it?
-That is hard to say. Every band we have different thoughts on. We try not to put too much into particular goals other than to release the best albums we can. Hopefully they will do well.
You have been doing for so long and you have shaped my youth and many others. What is that drives you to still do this?
-I love being able to turn people on to new music. It still gives me a rush to put something out and have people dig it. I still love the music.
You have been doing this for three decades now. I live in the present but when it comes to music I tend to return to the stuff that got me into metal in the 80s. How hard is it to predict what band’s will appeal?
-Very hard. I just go with what my gut says and more times than not, what I like other people seem to like as well.
Do you feel like you are a part of a greater community?
-For sure!! We are all part of the metal family. It is really a great place to be and play a role in it.
I get a feeling that today everything is so fleeing that if you are not there instantly you are too late. How hard/easy is it to find the next great band today?
-Getting harder for sure these days. There are so many places people can discover music it makes it very hard for new bands. I think bottom line is just keep doing it and staying true to what you love and hopefully people will eventually find out about it.
What influences/inspires you today to sign bands? Where do you draw inspiration from? Is it important that they have some sort of message?
-I still totally love the music. That is my main motivation now as it was in the beginning. I think the message is just to have great music!
We hear about what state the record industry is in. Then we hear that CD sales are increasing. As a label what state is the industry is in?
-I think it is getting better. Physical is still doing well and now the streaming services are really doing well.
What is your opinion on digital verses physical?
-I like both. With physical you get a great package and with digital you can listen to whatever you want wherever you are.
What lies in the future?
-Hopefully more great music and new bands coming from us for as long as we can!!
