If you don’t know much about CALAMITY this is your chance to get to know them a bit better. Anders Ekdahl ©2018
How hard was it to come up with a band name and how does the name fit the music?
– That’s a funny one because we’ changed the name of the band a few times before we came up with “Calamity”. We actually gained recognition in the local scene with our previous band name Hush. But in 2013 Berny took the place as the singer and the music became more intence and more deep so we decided to go as Calamity and kind of restart the Band with a different perspective. So now the music fits perfectly with the name.
What was it that made you want to be in a band in the first place?
-We’ve had the same motivation from the beginning. We are best friends and all of us like music. We always talked about having our own band when we was at mid-school, by then we loved Metallica, Maiden, Avenge Sevenfold, Lamb of God so it was a natural thing. One day we was playing Rock Band (The videogame) and decided to actually start making our own band. Started to practice in garages and so…
As I am no musician I have no idea how it works, but how do you make your own music based on what influences you? What parts do you pick?
-Well, influences are something inevitable, they are part of the writing process without even thinking about em. So when we start writing a song we just do what we feel is right. According to the different teastes of each one of us and according to what we want to achieve with that particular song. In the making we would notice a lot of influences and a few X or Y band vibes in certain riffs or melodies.
When you are in a band does it feel like you are a part of a worldwide movement?
-Heavy Metal is definitely a world wide movement that is still strong. We believe we are here to empower and refresh Metal Music just like a thousend of other bands are doing in ther respectives styles. So yes! We are part of the Metal movement around the world. Proudly!
How important is it that you look the part in promo shots and stuff? How important is the graphic side of the band?
-For us having a great promo and image is as crucial as having a great musical content. Cause thats the way you comunicate to your fans and to new people what you’re doing and what you have to offer. You can be the best artist in the world with the best music but if you don’t put effort in promo and communication so others can listen to your art then no one will know no you are the best.
What would you say influences your lyrics? How important are they?
-The main influences for our lyrics are the way we feel about life and the way we think the world moves and function. For our upcoming album, Kairos we wrote about self experiences. The way we think about ourselves as a band, the way we feel when we are alone, the way we think about our social environment. Its all about self experiences. That’s our way to keep it real.
Is the album as relevant today as it was in the 70s and 80s? Is digital killing the album?
-Digital streams and sells did harm the album industry. But thats the way it is with the music industry, it is constantly changing and you have to be always on the move so you won’t get stoked anywhere. Album are still relevant for Rock musicians tho. Cause Rock & Roll still selling tangible products such as CD’s, Vynils and all sort of merch with your band logo on it. So as a rock artist we should do both physical and digital releases so everyone is happy!
Where will the future of format end – digital verses physical verses whatever?
-Digital will keep dominating the game and will grow even bigger. But as long as fans still appreciating physical albums there will be an important spot for them in the industry.
How much of a touring entity are you guys? What is a live experience with you like?
We love touring, we love playing live. We actually made ourselves a name in Puerto Rico out of our energetic live performance before even releasing music. We will continue delivering the best live experience we can offer and will keep pushing the band to the limits. That’s the way to go with Calamity.
What lies in the future?
-New Music, new videos, new artistic concepts, lot of energy, a fresh and enhances live performance. 2019 its gonna start with the release of our new Album, KAIROS and with it people will get the best version of Calamity ever seen!
