I haven’t really decided if I am a cat or dog person but I do like CATS IN SPACE. ©2016 Anders Ekdahl
You have one of these names that does not really tell what kind of rock/metal you play. How hard was it to come up with the name?
-I wanted a name that people would either love or hate so at least that way they remembered it! CATS in SPACE means a lot personally to myself, a cat lover, when i lost my cat last year i said he would be looking down from Space..and the name was born there!
Could you give us a short introduction to the band?
-CATS in SPACE is made up from a band of amazing players with over 30 years expeirience playing in bands like, THE SWEET, 10cc, ASIA, T’PAU, IAN GILLAN to name but a few- Paul Manzi, Jeff Brown, Dean Howard, Steevi Bacon, Andy Stewart and myself Greg Hart! We all love 70s rock and pop and are all a bit crazy!
What would you say have been the single greatest influence on your sound?
-ELO, QUEEN and all those classic 70s chart rock bands who were not afraid to play commercial 3 minute songs as well as epic album tracks.
What is the metal scene like in your area? Do you feel that you are a part of a scene?
-No we are not Metal at all! so we have no link to any scene involving heavy metal.. we aint Judas Priest (tho we love that band!) we are linked to a slightly older audience who prefer more mainstream commercial rock.
Something I have often wondered about is if you feel that you are part of something bigger and greater when you play in a band, that you are part of a movement sort of?
-Well, we are getting told that we have ‚a sound‘ even tho clearly our influences are there to hear on the record, somehow we have, allegedly, made our own sound, which is very cool!
When you play the sort of metal you play I guess you cannot have birds and bees on the cover of your album? What is a great album cover to you?
-As we are not a metal band, our covers can be anything really…but i like it to reflect all those great covers from the 1970s – Roger Dean, Jim Fitzpatrick they made amazing sleeves, we like all that.
What is your opinion on digital verses physical? Is digital killing music?
-Digital is not for us apart from the necessary downloads, which I personally hate! …Vinyl is king- simple!
What kind live scene is there for bands like yours?
-Hard! The UK is not great unless you are packaged onto a big bill- I hear Europe is much better for bands to get out and play. The UK scene is dying.. horrid truth but truth it is..
When you play live is it a happening or do you see it more as a party?
-We are yet to play live, but when we do, we will be a bit more like how Queen approached playing live.. leave the album production as one sound, and live ‚kick it up a bit‘! So we intend to do that and rock out! And have fun..lots of it! We are serious in what we do, but we are also a happy bunch that like to laugh and joke about..
What would you like to see the future bring?
