CHABTAN

chabtan 2This is yet another band that I have no clue whatsoever about. But as I want to get to know more about CHABTAN I had to interview them? ©2016 Anders Ekdahl

Was it hard to come up with a name? What does the name mean to you?
-The most important aspect in the creation of this project was to find a mythological concept on which our texts, our artworks and different atmospheres would be based. We opted for the Meso American mythologies. It’s a very rich and complex culture with violent and bloody legends which feed our lyrics, grafisms and atmospheres in our music. Therefore, “CHABTAN” comes from the name of the Mayan god of sudden death and sacrifice “BULUC CHABTAN”.

Who would say are the founding stones of the kind of sound you have?
-In a first time, we have tried to offer the best guitar riffs. Then we wanted a modern and scandinavian sound, very cool, this is why we did mix and master in Scandinavia by Fredrik Nordstrom.
We also wanted to bring samples and atmospheres reminiscent of the mythological Meso American side. Finally for vocals, we wanted to integrate some clear vocals, always for the modern and melodic side of our music. These are the fundamental basis of our sound, our band.

When you play slow do you have to think differently arranging the music than if you play faster and vice versa?
-Yes, play slowly or quickly involves different arrangements of each instrument. But for us, we do not play slowly so we did not have to think in this direction. But we played faster or slower, we always try to keep a consistency in our arrangements, atmospheres. In fact I realize in answering this question it is done naturally, it fits but keeps in mind the atmosphere and the objective from the start when we start to compose the first note of the song.

How does your music work in a live environment?
-There it makes sense, as every metal bands. The energy of a metal concert is difficult transcribed on a CD. So we try to achieve a maximum of energy and we play loud, very loud 🙂

You have some releases to your name. Which one are you the most proud of?
-We released an EP in 2012 and we are proud of it because we have totally self produced and distributed for free on the internet. This EP was well received and gave us the strength and the desire to compose an album. So this EP is a very high value to us.
But we were not yet fully accomplished musically. So I would say that our greatest pride is our first album “The Kiss of Coatlicue”. We composed and refined for almost 2 years. We are also very happy with the mixing and mastering very successful since it was given to Fredrik Nordstrom (Arch Enemy, In Flames, Dimmu Borgir …).

Is it hard to reach out to all those that might be interested in your music? What alleys have you used to get people familiarized with your band?
-Yes it’s not easy to successfully reach all the people we want, especially because of the concurrency and infinite ability to broadcast music on the Internet today. On the other hand, the internet is a powerful weapon of communication. We focus all our communication via Facebook that allows us to target our audience. The various webzine, fanzines, metal community also help us spread our music. We are fortunate to be part of an art movement in which the public is curious and is often looking for new groups to discover. So sometimes they come to us

What to you is a great front cover? What should a cover have to make it great?
-To me, a good cover is an original and beautiful cover that makes it remembers. But it must especially reflect the music and the various elements which form the band, the project.

Do you feel that you are part of a national scene? What is the climate for metal in your country?
-I will say that we are creating a place for us in the French national scene but it will certainly require a second album to make full part of it. France is full of metal bands, some of which are really very good and we must continue to defend our album on stage and get people talking about us to really be accepted as a metal band recognized in France. We still have a lot to prove but we have a lot of motivation to the fact that our first album seems to have been appreciated both by the public and by the medias.

How do one promote oneself the best possible way?
-The best way to promote a music project today is obviously to be visible on social networks but especially play, play and play again, in different countries if possible. Because the best promotion is done by the public and we all know very well that the metal public is the best to promote the bands they like 😉

What does the future hold?
-For now we have only one objective, to defend our first album “The Kiss of Coatlicue” playing as possible and throughout the world. We have some music videos in preparation for 2016. And if all goes well, maybe next year, we will think of a second album!
