CYRENCE is another German thrash metal band to impress us. Interview with Tim Grathwohl (Vocals, Guitars). ©2015 Anders Ekdahl

Could you please introduce the band to us?
-Hey Folks, we’re CYRENCE, a melodic Thrash-Metalband from Munich, Germany. We’re four guys: Tom plays drums, Chris plays Bass and does backing vocals, Dominic plays guitar. I am Tim, I play Guitar and sing.

When you form how easy is it to pick up a thread as to where your sound is going??
-Usually when we start to write a new song, it’s because we have a guitar riff that kicks ass. So the guitar riff shows the direction of the song. Of course, there are songs that totally leave the path of the original idea, like „I Won’t Fall“. When I wrote the first riff of that song, I didn’t know it would become such a long and dynamic song.

How do you explain the meaning of the band name?
-Well, we just wanted to have a name that sounded cool and consists of just one word, and I think we achieved that. Actually it is a combination of the words „Silence“, „Sirens“ and „Cyborg“, but apart from me being a sci-fi fan there’s not really much of a story behind it.

How important is image to the band? What impression do you want the fans to get of the band?
-We just want the band to be recognized as what we are: a metalband with no boundaries. We like it heavy, we like it intelligent, and we like it spicy! We’re not afraid to incorporate uncommon styles, if it benefits the song!

I am a huge fan of LP art work. How important is it to have the right art work for your album?
-Me too! Totally! I can’t imagine releasing an Album just with a black cover and a Logo of the band. The right Cover-Artwork is essential to us. It’s a visual representation of the music!

How do you avoid being affected by the hype likes on youtube and facebook can create on social media?
-To be honest with you, we don’t really care much about that. Social Media is necessary for bands today, so we use it too, and of course we’re very happy when there are people out there who show their appreciation by liking us on Facebook. But we would never pay for Facebook-likes. Also we would never change our image to get more likes. It really isn’t that important to us.

When you play in a metal band does it feel like you are a part of massive community?
-Absolutely. Especially in Bavaria, there are so many great underground metal Bands like Running Death, Reverend Hound, White Mantis and Dissorted. The thing is: there are really just a few dickheads out there, but so many great people! Usually you share the stage with anoher band and you are friends afterwards. That’s what’s so great about the metal community.

How important is it to be signed to label today? What can they dothat you cannot so on your own?
-That depends on your goals. If you’re happy to be a local underground act, I think you’re fine without a label or professional help. But if you set your goals a little bit higher (or much higher), I think it’s a good thing to have professional help or to be signed to a label. Thing is, you’ll reach the point where you just can’t manage everything on your own anymore, and there a label can be a big help.

How much of a touring band are you guys? How hard is it to get gigs outside of your borders?
-Due to our families and jobs we’re not much of a touring band. We really love to play single concerts, but a tour is almost impossible to do. But I think it wouldn’t be much of a problem to get gigs outside of Bavaria. You just have to ask around.

What will the future bring?
-More Gigs! In the last couple of months, we put all energy into the recording of our EP „The Hospital“, so we didn’t play many concerts. That is what we’re about to change 🙂
