Was it hard to come up with a name? What does the name mean to you? How important is it to have the right name?
Hi There ! The band’s name was created almost 15 years ago! I was not even playing guitar at the time so I can barely answer this question ! All I can say today is that the band’s name has to be describing , even a little, the kind of music you are playing. The fact is that a lot of people are discovering you reading your name, so it has to be something that incites to listen to your music. So I think Deathawaits is quite a good name to play death metal !
Who would say have laid the foundation for the kind of sound you have? Who are your heroes musically and what have they meant to you personally and to the sound of your band?
-For our new album ‘Solve Coagula’, we decided to go big working with HK in the french studio Vamacara. The only advice we gave him was to make it sound big ! And I think he managed to make a massive production that really fits with the music. As a musician, bands like The Black Dalhia Murder or Malevolence are clearly influencing my playing and composition.
When you play slow do you have to think differently arranging the music than if you play faster and vice versa?
-I think playing faster or slower is not a big deal. It only depends on if the riff is good or not ! Sometimes groove does not depend on how fast you play a song or a riff.
Will your music work in a live environment? What kind of stage environment would best suit your music; a big stage or a small club?
-From the beginning of the band, we allways composed our music to play it live. Live performances are the reason why we play in the band. That is the reason why we are working hard everyday to broadcast our music, to contact festivals or venues ! We obviously like big stages because it is often good conditions to play on. But sometimes the concerts in smallest places turns out to be incredible parties, with amazing crowds due to promiscuity.
It is very hard to be 100% satisfied. Everybody seems to be disappointed with something they have released. Is there something that you in hindsight would have done differently on this your latest recording?
-Yeah of course ! I think this is the case with a lot of musicians because you compose and arrange the music far before the release. So when the CD first comes to the ears of the fans, as musicians we have already listened it a thousand times ! Obviously we are very proud of this record today. But this does not mean we would not change some things if we could.
Promotion can be a bitch. Even today with all different platforms it can be hard to reach out to all those that might be interested in your music? What alleys have you used to get people familiarized with your band?
-Yeah I agree, promotion is a bitch ! Today you can have the best material, but if nobody listens to it that’s a problem. As I told you, our goal is to tour and make the most gigs we can. So we have to promote and broadcast our music first. We decided to promote our album wolrdwide collaborating with an international label : SLIPTRICK RECORDS and by now we are very pleased by their work. In addition, we are working with a french partner, APATHIA PR to promote the band in France especially. We work a lot on promotion this time, I hope it will bear fruits !
To me art work can be the difference between bust or success. What to you is a great front cover? What should a cover have to make it great?
-I think the artwork is the product wrapping. So it has to be good to maximize the chances that the guy listens to your music! I like very different kind of artworks. I think the most important is to have the most professionnal final artwork, and not an awful paint photomontage !
Do you feel that you are part of a national scene? Is a local/national scene important for the development of new bands?
-Honestly I do not think that we are a big band in the national scene. But we are all making things the best we can to be part of it ! We are a small underground band, but we want a make things the most professional way. The local scene is of course important for bands like us, because it is what allows us to exist as a band ! So one advice : support your local scene !
I could just be me but I got the feeling that the live scene is not what it used to be. Could be that more and more people use the net to discover bands instead of going out and supporting new bands live. What is you experience with the live scene?
-Yeah I also think that the live scene has changed. But on the other hand, internet is a way for smaller band to exist as well as bigger bands. I think
that some of our fans may not know us without using the internet.
What does the future hold?
-I hope we will continue to do music the way we like to do it ! We will tour during maybe 1 or 2 years and we will be back in the studio to record the next album soon !
