It is strange how we can look upon the same band differently, how we can judge a bands catalogue differently. But that is what makes music so great, that we can listen to the same band nad still not have the same fave songs/albums. Seppo Nummela from DENIGRATE tries to help me understand what his band is allabout. Anders Ekdahl ©2016
I am a word buff so when I find a band name that excites me I want to know the reason behind the choice. So how did you pick your name?
-The name Denigrate came from the Carcass song “Heartwork”.
There are so many genres and sub-genres today that it is hard to keep track of them all. So what was it that made you pick the style you play?
– I wanted to do melodic and melancholic metal with nice solos.I was listening the bands like Katatonia, Anathema, Testament, Paradise Lost at that time.
What influences you in creating your music? What is/has been the single greatest influence?
– Life… Sometimes I need to be happy to create melancholic tunes, but sometimes the despair and sadness affect to the tunes.
Greatest influence..-> losing a good friend.
How important is it to have a message as a band?
– Hard to say.. Maybe nowdays that is also important, but I just try to compose good songs.
Is image an important factor to the bands appearance?
-Too important. Image 60% and music 40% as far as I have understood..haha 😀
But in our case that is not gonna happen. Too ugly and old guys in a band.
How important is it to have an album cover that stands out to grab people’s attention in this day and age?
-I think that is or was important. The records does not sell so much now days, so maybe that is not so important any more.
I want that the album cover is in a line with the music.
What kind of respect do you get from your local scene?
-I think that some people likes and some hates. 😀
How massive is it to get response from places you have never heard of?
-It is very nice.
Is playing live still a great way to get new fans to discover you?
– Yes. I think that it is a only way to get some reputation nowdays. Everyone can make an album in living room (and fix every stroke or note), so playing live show your real talent.
What does the future have in its womb?
-We are composing new songs at the moment. We are also trying to do a split 7″ with Fragile Hollow somewhere in the summer 2016. There might be a chance that we will do an EP (DOOM) before the third album.
