I do not follow any dogmas at all. Unless it is DOGMA INC. Anders Ekdahl ©2018

What fascinates me is how you can still come up with new combinations of chords to make new songs and sounds that have not been heard before. What is it that fascinates you into coming up with new songs and albums?
-Well, thank you. We have been working hard for almost five years to accomplish this album and it was up to us so that every single note is special somehow. Our goal was simple, we wanted accomplish something unique as I thing every artist whatever he does dreams of. I think everything has been done on a six string guitar in a past but there are other territories like rhythms, sounds, musicalization, what can make a band like no other. And simply if something reminded us a riff we heard before we simply let it flow off, off course we have our influences which you can hear on album but still, all of us came from different music environments what makes it a strong benefit at the end.

How is this new recording different from the previous? How do you take your sound one step further?
-Again, I think we did a hell of good job and left nothing behind. The preproduction, mix, mastering, art cover everything we anticipated and of course Chris ”Zeuss” Harris did his part very well. The previous record is ten years old people and environments are changing, I dont wanna say that the previous album is better or worse. Simply those times we did it like that and we stand for it. Than we didnt have so much experience as we do now. We are older now more experienced we listen more music genres. We pay more attention to details which are significant for us.

When you write songs about the topics you do what kind of reactions do you get? How important is it to have a message in your lyrics? What kind of topics do each song deal with? Is there a red thread to the songs?
-Yes the linkage between music and lyric is Important for us, we spent the same amount of time do the arrangements as I write many different kinds of lyrics. Sometimes the lyrics comes first and dont have song for it cos it simply dont fit with the material. Writing lyrics is the same as producing quality music. There are times when I do lyrics for three songs in a day a then there are three months I wouldnt write a word. The message in lyrics for Blacksun Flowers is very different cos it was done in five years and in that period you go through many things good or bad its all caught in that album. I like simplicity but ambiguity in the same time, so when you read the lyric for several times something else comes out for you depending on your frame of mind. And I definitely agree that lyrics submitted with good singing helps out a song like nothing else.

Whenever I think of you I cannot help wandering off to different bands. What bands/sounds do you identify with?
-This question we get very often and always keeps us wondering and thinking cos we listen so many genres of music. And everybody in a band listens something else. The easier answer would be music styles as: metal, hardcore, rock, jazz, electro, rockabilly, and its all spiced with lot of blues. But we can agree that we all like it heavy as much as possible.

How did you go about choosing art work for this new album? What was important to have in it?
-We knew that it has to be something ambiguity and original, I remember that it took us several months to come out with phrase :“black sun flowers”. We wanted to do some shouts in a sunflower field which ultimately didnt come out cos it was a cliché done by many bands before, but that time the sunflower theme came to talk so many times that somehow the Blacksun Flowers came to life. And we were so excited we still love it.

Something that scares me a bit is this I hear from more and more bands that they aren’t that bothered with art work anymore because people today download rather than buy physical. To me the whole point is to have art work that matches the music. I don’t know how many times I’ve been disappointed by weak art work to an otherwise cool album. What’s your opinion on this subject?
-Absolutely agree with you! Honestly I can say that all members of the band have a very close relationship to art and we are surrounded by artists not only in the field of music and they are also an inspiration for us. We consider the Blacksun Flowers album as an artistic work and as we have worked on it for a relatively long time but hard, we did not want to underestimate the album artwork as well. We consider the quality artwork to be a very important thing, and I believe that „artwork sells“. I often go to concerts and beside the ticket I buy the T-shirt automatically and I have to say that a good design plays an important role for me. It happened not once that I bought a CD or a T-shirt on the basis of an cool design.

How do you come up with song titles? What do they have to have to fit the songs?
-Well this is hard to say its a very artistic kind of feel. And sometimes we turned the title down even after longer time and rename it before it was recorded of course. For me the title has to have a secret message like for example Devil speed is a fast song and the title fits perfectly but the secret message is a confession of a abused women. Sometimes its very personal of course. .

I use Spotify and Deezer but only as compliment to buying CDS (it’s easier to just have your phone or pad when you’re out) but I fear that soon music as we know it will be dead and buried. What are your worries as a band?
-There are more and more bands out there wanted to be heard which is a good thing cos its forces other bands to work harder and there is internet which moves advertisement so much faster but as a old school listener I had always better feeling and appreciations from a CD or LP with a nicely made booklet. My fears are more focused towards live shows.Always less people visiting clubs or you can see older generations and less young ones on live shows.

How much of a live band are you? How important is playing live?
-I am glad for this question, cos just the other day we were talking with drummer how to catch more our live strength, raw energy and aggression on the next album .So yes we are a very much and mostly live band. The writing process for new songs was mostly done by jamming live in rehearsal room. We love playing live shows after all thats where the band can show the real strength and potential. There are still things we would like to work on to make live playing more comfortable but we working on it and enjoying it very much.

What lies in the future?
Playing live, working on new stuff, playing live again. We had a very good succesfull year. We had a opportunity to
-support bands we love like Crowbar, Voivod , Anthrax…we want to keep it that way. Preparing new materials from what we are very excited already. As a band we are greatfull that we are not forced to do anything we are not identify with. Thats a very comfortable process thanks to our record label “Slovak Metal Army”. So hope to see you on live show…
Check us out!!!
