DYING GORGEOUS LIES has one of those band names that just grabs you the first time you see it and then won’t let go. ©2016 Anders Ekdahl
What is this band really all about?
-Basically we founded this band to play some ass-kicking metal and to give a voice to the things we were dealing with. We wanted to reach the eyes and ears of people. As time passed by the band turned into our purpose in life.
Is there a difference in people’s attitude towards you if you don’t come from a cool place like LA or NY or London?
-Actually we don’t think that it makes much difference because the most important thing is the music and not where you come from. The only difference might be that coming from a big city makes it easier to get in touch with useful contacts in the music business.
When you release an album that get pretty good reviews how do you follow up on that?
-Great reviews like we received for our two records show us that we are on a good way. Of course we keep on advancing our skills and try to consider criticism. Right now we are writing the songs for our upcoming third record. We already tried some of them live and received a great echo from the audience.
What is the biggest challenge in the creation of an album, to write the songs or to come up with really good songs?
-The biggest challenge is not to create a simple song but to create something unique that finds it’s place on the album. 5. Do you prefer working digitally or is physical still cooler? For the process of songwriting working digitally is easier, because everyone can compose in the same work-sheet, Dropbox and GuitarPro make the magic happen Emoji wink. On stage we prefer good old tube amplifier and pass on e.g. trigger on the drums.
With a sound that is being described as both this and that by fans how do you view your sound?
-Austrian Metal magazine Metalunderground described us as “a new but very inspiring breed of Female Fronted Metal” because we don’t fit in neither the Nightwish/Lacuna Coil nor the Arch Enemy/Arkona category. What we would pretty much describe ourselves is a mixture between Heavy and Thrash Metal with unique vocals and technical know-how.
How important are the lyrics and what message do you want to purvey?
-Lyrics have the same place as the music in songwriting. We don’t want to talk about unimportant clichés that have been discussed in thousands of other songs. Our lyrics are about things that really concern or move us and that we want to be heard. For example we sing about personal experience with labor leasing and the feeling of being an exchangeable number. Another topic is the story of a friend of the band who fell into a vegetative state some years ago and the helplessness we felt about it.
What part does art work for album covers play in the world of the band?
-The artwork supports the main topic of the album, music and artwork complete one another so the whole record becomes a unity.
When you play live do you notice a degree of greater recognition from the fans with each new time you pass through town?
-Yes of course, the more you play in one town, the more people wear your shirt and can sing your songs.
What do you see in the future?
-We just signed a great management and booking deal and they are working hard on our upcoming shows and tours with some well-known bands. More information coming soon, stay tuned on our channels.
