The first time I saw the band name EISENHAUER I came to think of an American politician. But that is just me and my brain. Interview with Christian “Waxe” Wagner from the Band Eisenhauer/singer and guitar. Anders Ekdahl ©2016

How hard was it to come up with a band name and how does the name fit the music?
-“Eisen” is german and means iron, “Hauer” is a blacksmith, someone who beats the iron. The name fits perfectly with a heavy metal band. But „Hauer“ also means Tusk. Can you imagine how it is, when a wild boar with iron tusks is tearing your ass off? Ha ha ha. We all have pretty much the same taste and humor. “Eisenhauer” sounded strong and cool and that’s it.

As I am new to your band perhaps a short introduction might be in order?
-Eisenhauer is from Kaufbeuren / Bavaria/ Germany. The members are Ase (bass), Johann (drums), Simon (guitar) and me (Waxe – vocals, guitar), The band was founded in 2007. The first years we met to jam and doing coverversions. Then in 2009 we wrote our first own song “Black Wings of a Crow”. In 2013 we released our debut album “Never Surrender” and 2015 the „Horse Of Hell – EP“ by ourself.
How can i describe our sound? I would love to say, just listen to our songs. But okay, I’ll try it. Eisenhauer is… ass kicking Metal, ha ha ha. I want to say it with the words of a friend: EISENHAUER pay homage to the classic HEAVY METAL with a strong Teutonic component, which is a guarantor for multiple uplifting moods. Attractive earthy structures, invigorating powerful guitar work, commanding bass lines, powerfully drumming and a comprehensive impressive singer provide a variety of rocking high feelings.

As I am no musician I have no idea how it works, but how do you make your own music based on what influences you? What parts do you pick?
-I listen to the music as a fan. Therefore I make songs I want to hear as a fan. When I play guitar and a riff or a melody comes back again and again, and makes me bang, than it feels right and I use it. I’m always looking for this exciting and energetic feeling that I felt, when I heard heavy music for the first time in my life. I always write the music first, than the lyrics. All the music I listen to for decades influenced me. We are children of the ’80s and are mostly on the NWOBHM, early Heavy Metal,Thrashmetal and Hardcore. Some of my all-time favorites are early Iron Maiden, Ronnie James Dio, Mercyful Fate, Suicidal Tendencies, Cro-Mags, Danzig and Slayer. Also, I’m a big Johnny Cash fan. But my strongest inspiration is this feeling of Heavy Metal that I have, not to give up, keep fighting, to believe in yourself and your music and to pursue your goal. Through the music I try to handle my demons and keep the flame burning.

When you are in a band does it feel like you are a part of a worldwide movement?
-It feels more like 4 buddies that rock together, drink beer and have fun. But it`s a good feeling to know that there are people out there who love the same kind of music. EISENHEADS – UNITED!

How important is it that you look the part in promo shots and stuff? How important is the graphic side of the band?
-On stage we do not want to be simply dressed only in black. Therefore, we have our own Eisenhauer „Kutten“ with patches of our band logo and our mark the boar’s head with iron tusks. And of course the EISENHEADS-UNITED patch. It is very important to implement our texts and ideas visually. We get wonderful assistance in the pictures, the layout and our lyricvideo for Horse of Hell. Please check out our friend from Mexico, Joel Sanchez Rosales (facebook.com/joeycreationsart). Thank you for the amazing coverartwork.

What would you say influences your lyrics? How important are they?
-Mostly I have from the outset a very particular feeling or mood that takes influence on the lyrics. Sometimes there are even single words that create images or stories in me. Sometimes the lyrics are more metaphorical, sometimes I love just the images that I am describing. But ultimately, the film runs in the mind of the listener. The Theme of “never surrender” runs like a red thread through all our lyrics. Believe in what you do and do it with your heart.

Is the album as relevant today as it was in the 70s and 80s? Is digital killing the album?
-No idea. There are people who just consume music and need every day the hottest shit. Then there are fans who are fully dedicated to their music and love nothing more than diving into a world of an entire album.

Where will the future of format end – digital verses physical verses whatever?
-Every era has its own medium. As a child I heard music from tapes, records and cassettes. Then came the CD, which is already threatened with extinction. Personally, I like to keep my music in my hands. Best in vinyl with great cover and legible text. I do not need vast amounts of data on my computer. Vinyl has it all survived. I prefer the black gold!

How much of a touring entity are you guys? What is a live experiencev with you like?
-A tour is not planned, but we’ll see what happens. In the summer we play smaller festivals in Bavaria and Italy. Get ready for a simple deal: We give you metal from the heart and you give us sweat.

What lies in the future?
-We are currently writing new songs. Maybe we are recording another EP, with another killer artwork and everything you love as a fan. For us it is the coolest format. If things go well with the writing, there may also be a whole LP. Now we try, to bring our music to the people and play as much live as we can.
Thank you for the Interview, EISENHEADS-UNITED!
