It’s when you dig deeper into the underground that you realize that there are too many bands to keep track of, past and present. I try to do my best presenting as many bands as I can, like EMPHERIS. Anders Ekdahl ©2016
As I am not at all familiar with your band perhaps you could introduce it?
EMPHERIS has been called to form a flesh in the end of 2003 upon ashes of ERIS (1995-2003). First official demo was Bloodwrath, recorded in december 2004 with Empherion – gtr., Bonif – bass, Helvete – dr, and Adrian – voc. In meantime band was playing their first gigs, ready to next recording session of demo Ancient Necrostorms. It transformed into debut album with the same title. This album cleared band style as black/thrash metal with deep classic old school inclinations. After recording the second album Regain Heaven, horde played concerts in Germany and Poland with bands such as Aura Noir, Inquisition, Witchmaster, Dead Infection, Quo Vadis, Adultery, Hellsaw. Following years the band recorded a mass of splits, EP, demo, which was released on every possible media in many countries around the world, excluding web releases. In result Empheris was baptized as succesors of Nun Slaughter and Sabbat – which is not accurate diagnosis in member’s eyes. Next gigs was huge rituals at side of bands: Possessed, Varathron, Headhunter DC, Rotting Christ, Hazael, Besatt, and many more. In 2014, Empherion and drummer Varaska left the band. Their place was filled by Giorgi Tchutchulashvli (Chanid), Tomasz Dobrzeniecki (Hazael, Alastor, Nightmare…) and Burner of the Cross (from argentinian Morbosus). Rest of personel are constantly Bonif and Adrian. With new members the band keeps playing live gigs, and is getting ready to craft some new material – especially still delayed third longplay.
How hard was it for you guys to pick a name? What had that name have to have to fit your music?
-The name grown from ancestor band Eris. We kept core and bound it with Ephemeris – tables describing future cosmic phenomena. Many our lyrics have reference to this topic. This union made new word – Empheris. There is not any hidden philosophy or deeper messages…
What band(s) was it that turned you on to the kind of metal you play? What inspires you today?
-Everyone of us has his own inspirations. Personally I am orthodox and still the best metal bands are for me like Bathory, Venom, Hellhammer, Messiah, Mercyful Fate, Sodom, Kreator, Possessed… Of course I am speaking about 80’s. There are many good music nowadays, like Kommandant, Grave Miasma, Cult Of Daath, – they rule. Also in Poland there are a lot of great fresh blood, like: Offence, Embrional, Poisoned, Moloch Letalis, Maze, Warfist, Incarnated. Every of each band has influence on us, even by motivating us to act, to work fuckin’ harder on concerts or rehearsals.
What is the advantages/disadvantages of CD and vinyl these days of internet promotion where digital seems to be king?
-Personaly I screw mp3 and all this digital shit. I am collecting CDs, LPs and tapes. Music has to have some dressing you can handle, touch and look at it. Mp3, well – it’s like masturbation instead of real sex. I am sorry about anyone who likes it most.
Is digital killing the album format?
-Are you kidding? Is masturbation better than sex?
What part does art work and lay out play? Any message that you want to bring forth with it?
-To be honest, I am not sure what how I have to answer to this question. The message are lyrics and music. You can ask me as well “what are you playing?”. About covers, most of them was created by our friend, Jary, who died in car accident. We still have some of his unpublished arts, which was made for our future releases.
Is it a whole different way to promote a band today with all these social media channels? Or do you go about doing promotion the same way? Playing live and word of mouth.
-Still we are answering more interviews for paper, than web zines. Webzines are sending more messages since Alex from Dead Center & Grand Sounds was fund as Empheris facebook account. We avoiding this way many years and…we are on FB. Does it change anything? I don’t know, cause I don’t have account on FB and I am not following any internet forums.
Do you feel like you are a part of a scene, locally, nationally and internationally?
-Today’s Empheris team is international: drummer is from Argentina, guitarist from Georgia, we all met in Warsaw, where almost all of us are leaving. We have rehearsals here. Our past drummer was woman and she was from…Russia.
How much of a touring band are you? Is touring/gigging still a great way of spreading the word of the band?
-Of course yes! Shows are base in band’s life. As Empheris we played several dozens of gigs during over a dozen years of playing. It’s not a lot, but every single concert was great experience, and every one had a great energy like ECT. We are playing in many different places like little clubs without any stage or great concert halls, or open air fests – always was fucking awesome.
What will the future bring?
– Certainly – death! And before maybe some beers?
