ESSENZ

ESSENZ is a really cool German black metal band that i have been late in discovering. Anders Ekdahl ©2018

Let’s start with your latest recording. When you look back at it now what kind of feelings do you have for it?
-It’s a great variety of feelings from “a” like “anger” to “z” like “zero fucks given”.

I am fascinated by band names. What was it that made you settle on the one you have and what does it mean to you?
-The concept of the band always was to speak to and about the inner core and inner truth of people, things. The essence behind the superficial shells.

What does it mean to you that there are people out there that actually appreciate and look forward to what you are doing?
-This is utterly fascinating, but where does your question stems from?

How important is image to the band? What impression do you want the fans to get of the band?
-We don’t care that much about image. Image is what is produced by others after mirroring the band’s work.

I am a huge fan of LP art work. How important is it to have the right art work for your album?
-If you release something on LP it is an essential part to have a proper artwork, which mirrors or adds to the music.

We live in a superficial world today where you don’t exist if you are not on Youtube and Facebook. Has social media been only beneficial in socializing with the fans or is there a down side to it too?
-There is always a down-side to things. Some people don’t deal with art as a whole anymore and switch through superficial levels, but there’s also a great advantage of having a bigger variety of and a greater access to music.

When you play in a band does it feel like you are a part of a massive community? That you belong to something that gives meaning to your life?
-It’s not about being in a community, it’s about creating something on your own and living with my passion, which has been part of my life before.

When you are in the middle of it do you notice what state our beloved music scene is in? Is the scene healthy or does it suffer from some ailment?
-There is no such general description like “health” or “ailment”. It’s always a question of what specific aspect you’re talking about and which stand-point / view you have on that. Like said bedore, you will always find positive and negative aspects about anything and that’s nothing new. It always was and forever will be like that, independently of a never ending evolution of music.

How much of a touring band are you guys? How hard is it to get gigs outside of your borders?
-We love to tour, but haven’t had much opportunities yet. That might change soon.

What will the future bring?
-Hope and despair, destruction and creation, love and hate.
