have one of these names that does not really tell what kind of metal you play. How hard was it to come up with the name?
-With the name of the band was intended to establish an unusual idea as to the use of the word, that goes beyond the so popular cliche of black metal; In this sense, the intention was to forge a name that does not possess any black metal band, and also resume a significant and decisive event in the mythical area where the ancestral symbolism is raised a perennial way to represent music band. In this vein, it should be noted that the Hebrew word NERFAL (ליפול) was used in the Old Testament when evoking the “fall” of Lucifer or Lucifer, the expulsion of the kingdom of God into hell; “Fall” (ליפול) is poured into our alphabet as Nerfal, and decided to join the adjective “Evil” to designate the precipitation of evil, the steady decline of evil on the world, an ontology of evil; this concept of evil is understood as a radical opposition to all divine domain, where knowledge and arts are forbidden weapons to fight endlessly to the gods. Evil Nerfal then, while black metal band, represents the symbol of the fall ontological evil to fight all religious discourse, to declare war by sound shocking violence. That is the origin of the name, and is atypical, and that was the intention, and in no way represent any difficulty in entering the world of black metal, their welcome was satisfactory.
Could you give us a short introduction to the band?
-Evil Nerfal was created in the city of Pasto, Southern Colombia, in 2007, the epicenter of a radical and aggressive scene, where the black metal was lived day to day, exceeding the simple musical amusement; for 3 years began to create the first songs with intense rehearsals, with inspiration from the Swedish black metal of the 90’s and the South American old-school, with session musicians who shared the passion and ideas of the horde; a rehearsal with five songs at the end of 2009 was recorded and produced in 2010 in CD format, and only distributed to the black metalheads city. In 2010 I had to move to a city of Pereira, central Colombia, and after an intensive search for a drummer who share the ideas of the band, was in 2012 that Purzon Dominus became the gunner, as musical and philosophically he had the highest affinity to perform percussion. From this year we started to make intense rehearsals and final of 2013 the first album was recorded in the city of Ipiales, southern Colombia, in Immortality Studios; the strings and voice were recorded by me and Purzon was responsible for the battery. From that year several presentations were held in many cities across the country achieving well received by members of the underground black metal. We then enlisted the horde to Baalzephon maniack and Engram Zulphur as session guitarist and bassist respectively. The first album of the band, titled HAIL BLACK METAL … VOBISCUM BUER …, was released in 2016 by seals Tribulación Productions and Misanthropy Elite Productions, limited to 300 copies. Currently the horde continues to work with discipline in what will be the second album, of which there is 6-crafted songs, with the difference that are faster and more aggressive than the first album, but without losing that characteristic feeling.
What would you say have been the single greatest influence on your sound?
-Evil Nerfal has its inspiration in classic Swedish black metal bands, among which mainly highlight Marduk, Funeral Mist, Triumphator, Dark Funeral and Setherial; in the same vein, the Danish black metal band Denial Of God and Belgian Enthroned, has also contributed to the influence of the sound of the horde. Moreover, the extreme metal South Americans bands like Sarcophagus have contributed to the creation of our sound.
What is the scene like in your area? Do you feel that you are a part of a scene?
-Pereira Colombia, where the band is located, is part of an emerging scene, where the emergence of black metal bands is scarce, it is likewise limited the number of productions that few bands have released; genres like death metal , heavy metal and especially the thrash metal, have a considerable number of bands with their respective productions, which makes part of fashion and popularity booming, and we hate that, it sucks to see guys play to be the rock stars with their despicable benevolence. In this sense, we do not consider part of this scene is very pathetic and unserious, and with respect to black metal are few bands that make black metal cult and a consequent “praxis” existential, and the same is true of the scene of the city where Evil Nerfal was founded.
Something I have often wondered about is if you feel that you are part of something bigger and greater when you play in a band, that you are part of a movement sort of?
-Of course, and the main reason is that our work does not involve only a musical sphere, much less an ephemeral entertainment, and we are far from seeking popularity in the “scene”; We chose the black metal because doing this art we can find meaning in the existential banality. Thus, the black metal is for us an existential practice, and involves a worldview from which we adopted a position in society and the world, where they have an idea and be consistent with it becomes the essence and fundamental point; we are a band of black metal sincere where sincerity is linked to the seriousness; in this vein, we are part of Satan, since the difference and opposition are a way of life, and we live in opposition, and we declare satanic beings, an underground elite that seeks strength and power through black metal. We declare our hatred of all religious form, and hand knowledge we abjure of all alienation, because Satan is freedom. HAIL SATAN!
When you play the sort of music you play I guess you cannot have birds and bees on the cover of your album? What is a great album cover to you?
-Indeed, since when being a black metal band end cannot be expected to artistic representation be a flowery world of pink elephants hahaha. Art and aesthetics are the manifestation of sensibility, and as for the visual representation of black metal on a cover, keep in mind that everything must come from the experience of receiving the album, music must emerge art, music itself generates both poetry and image; for this reason, the artist commissioned to create the cover of an album must immerse listening the songs and the same sound that evokes what has to be drawn. Only then, in the phenomenal events of the aesthetics of reception, you can get a cover that is part of the same band.
What is your opinion on digital verses physical? Is digital killing music?
-It is a complex issue, because on one hand the internet has revealed bands, productions, interviews, concerts, record labels and countless numbers of issues that 20 years we could not imagine, for the precariousness of the media at that time. From this aspect is something positive, and we like it or not, every society generates corresponding means of communication, is a state of the same technological development, for this reason I think an anachronistic attitude is absurd and stupid. Moreover, it is clear that greatly affects the sale, distribution and work of bands, and more in developing countries such as Colombia, however the crux of the matter is how to use digital media, and these are vital when learning the news about the new productions, and reject is ridiculous, therefore, which as musicians and real fans should do is acquire the productions in physical, and how to use digital to know and make a judgment. It is more than that here in Colombia called the “cult”, the mystique of having in my hands a cd, lp, or tape, appreciate art and read the lyrics while listening, that’s the best experience, go into the strength of the horde with physical material, that is immeasurable and cannot be replaced by anything.
What kind live scene is there for bands like yours?
-For the Horde, the types of performances should be conducive for a ritual to consecrate the cult of the dark forces of the opposition, a stage for a real ritual, and obviously the sound should be full and powerful, because that way it is possible the shows reach more fully.
When you play live is it a happening or do you see it more as a party?
-The performances of Evil Nerfal are a “ritual”, which is understood as an “event”, a break with the everyday, so a single act, in no way a musical representation without more. Indeed, the ritual aims to re- affirmation of our worldview, therefore, in our performances the transformation of the band members is something evident, it is a magical act if by magic understand the fact of operating a transmutation one state to another; then operates a transformation, an evolution in becomes obvious in a ritual symbolism, a cult of satanic forces, where the chandeliers, the corpse-paint, blood, and the use of chains, cloves, spikes and ammunition are indispensable part of the live shows .
What would you like to see the future bring?
-Continue in the struggle for black metal cult on all fronts, recording the new album later this year and release it in 2017, along with multiple concerts around the country and possibly outside. Working with discipline and dedication to this cause that justifies our lives, and also strengthening our ideas with a lot of reading, nurture our art with the greatest rigor, always loyal to black metal and Satan .
