Many different things can come ..FROM THE DEEP. Like a metal band. Not being at all familiar with this lot I just had to find out a bit more. Answered by guitarist Michael Birch. Anders Ekdahl ©2016

What is this band really all about?
-..From the Deep is a reference to the unknown. We aim to create a sense of uncertainty in our music and lyrics, in that our music is always shifting in styles, tempos, and atmosphere. The ever changing moods found in our music and live performances are crucial to the deeper exploration and exploitation of the unknown absurdities which hide in our minds.

Is there a difference in people’s attitude towards you if you don’t come from a cool place like LA or NY or London?
-We all come from the same floating rock, yet all express their experience on this rock differently. People should not care what part of the moldy rock you’re from, whether it be the bleak summits, the dry desert, or the deepest depths of the sea- what matters is the expression and the exploration.

When you release an album that get pretty good reviews how do you follow up on that?
-…From the Deep have had incredible feedback and support for our latest EP “The Absurd Horror” and the many shows we have been fortunate enough to play. We are flowing with the momentum of the universe and are currently in the process of finalizing material and weaving tapestries of desecrating soundscapes for an upcoming release in the near future.

What is the biggest challenge in the creation of an album, to write the songs or to come up with really good songs?
-The biggest consideration (I wouldn’t call it challenge) is being open-minded to how a song is unfolding. We experiment with different moods, time signatures, atmosphere, and vocal techniques to explore our music as we write it. Every member has a unique approach and understanding of music, and we are able to manifest horrific sounds by exploring each other’s minds.

Do you prefer working digitally or is physical still cooler?
-As collectors of music, records, books and instruments, we hold physical albums close to our heart as complete pieces of art. The modern mind is drawn to the digital world and we must access this world to spread our wretched screams, but we put a lot of effort into the artwork, lyric presentation, and musical complexities of our releases.

With a sound that is being described as both this and that by fans how do you view your sound?
-We want to immerse the listener in an atmosphere dictated by acoustic breaths of calm and screams of agony, and to ignite curiosity of what is to come. We blend ominous groove with the relentless crushing of your spirit.

How important are the lyrics and what message do you want to purvey?
-Our lyrics are inspired by a broad range of subjects, such as: the insignificance of our existence when faced with the vast intricacies of the universe, esoteric literature, consciousness, and the exhaustion of modern life. Very often, our music is written with the lyrics serving as inspiration which often contributes to the ever shifting moods of the music.

What part does art work for album covers play in the world of the band?
-Album covers serve as an extended interpretation of the music it represents. On our latest EP “The Absurd Horror”, the artwork contains images which relate to each individual song in their own way- from the desperate clinging bodies spontaneously combusting into trees (We Will All Be Trees), to the man in the wheel who is eternally bound to repeat his existence (The Triumph of Sisyphus).

When you play live do you notice a degree of greater recognition from the fans with each new time you pass through town?
-…From the Deep consistently perform high energy and intricate sets in which we experiment with visual components, instrumental soundscape “jams”, and acts of self-inflicted physical brutality. This dedication to our live performances has caught the attention of many, and has allowed us to perform with a wide variety of bands such as Kreator, Absu, Macabre, Marduk, Origin, Taake, Cattle Decapitation and many more. We make a mark with our unique style and aggressive live show everywhere we go…

What do you see in the future?
-Unless Mother Earth has deservedly reclaimed her throne and fatally introduced our species to our mortality, …From the Deep will continue to create music that satisfies our curiosity of the unknown, and will hopefully leave ourselves bloodied and contorted on a stage near you…
