GHOST OF MARY

I have no idea who this Mary is but her ghost seem to matter to the band GHOST OF MARY, hence why naming themselves after her. Anders Ekdahl ©2017

When you formed the band with what intention did you do so? How easy was it to pick up a thread as to where your sound is going?
(Mauro) When we formed the band, our intention was to create our own kind of music, something unique, a sound that matches feelings, perceptions, memories, ideas and atmosphere. Every band member come from different backgrounds and different listenings. I think this is our strength: we all put inside our songs a part of ourselves which is different from one another and our songs grow as we grow. I can’t say if it is easy or hard, it just happens.

As I haven’t recorded anything I have no idea what that is like but are you ever 100% satisfied? How pleased are you with your latest recording?
(Mauro) Recording an album is as important as the creation of the album itself. We always work together to get the best results, intensive days of recording and listening until we reach what we had in mind. We can’t say we are 100% satisfied because it would mean we reached perfection, which is something we aim to but yet impossible to reach. We are very satisfied with our first album, thanks also to our producer Angelo Buccolieri who is not only a pro in his work but also a friend and a great person. There is always something new to learn during every recording!

To me a band name is the first thing I notice. If it feels cool then I’ll check the band out. How do you explain the meaning of the band name?
(Daniele) It’s true, the band name is very important to captive attention quickly from the audience. And that’s what I tried to do when I thought about of something mysterious which reminds of the oracle. The female name hasn’t any religious reference, I immediately liked the association with the image of the ghost.

How important is image to the band? What impression do you want the fans to get of the band?
(Daniele) The image is maybe important as the music because in a world like this the songs are not enough (unfortunately) to get noticed. But I also think that we don’t need to create something too different from reality, we can be ourselves taking care of the details. I like to image fans could know not only the musicians but also the real persons behind.

I am a huge fan of LP art work. How important is it to have the right art work for your album?
(Daniele) Also this aspect is fundamental. We were very lucky ‘cause the entire artwork was created by my brother Samuele who made an awesome job following my suggestions related to the concept album: the shades immersed in a imaginary dimension, the forest, the blazes of light, the tree and the moon in an alternative version. There’s no words to express my gratitude for his support.

We live in a superficial world today where you don’t exist if you are not on Youtube and Facebook. Has social media been only beneficial in socializing with the fans or is there a down side to it too?
(Mauro) Internet plays a key role today. Everyone around the world is connected and it is so easy to be informed about anything in real time. Basically there are no borders, you can spread your music and news about your band all over the world and the contact with your followers is always fast and direct. Just sometimes i miss those times when i was younger and went around music shops discovering new bands and going home all excited to unwrap that “mysterious” CD with that captivating artwork and listening to it with my friends…

Something I often wonder about is when you play in a band does it feel like you are a part of a massive community?
(Mauro) There is a big community out there of course. But personally I focus just on my band which I consider a family.

How important is it to be signed to label today? What can they do that you cannot do on your own?
(Mauro) There are many important aspects that need to be considered when you record an album: distribution, promotion, tour organization, printing and physical distribution on a larger scale…many things that you can do on your own of course, but under a label , which often have their own promotion and booking agency, you have a big help doing all of this.

How much of a touring band are you guys? How hard is it to get gigs outside of your borders?
(Daniele) Our album was released only one month ago, but we are working hard to bring our music everywhere as much as possible. Although we know it’s not easy, we are trying to collaborate with tour promoters and booking agencies. The forthcoming U.K. tour in January/February 2017 will be our first experience outside of Italy, can’t wait for this new adventure!

What will the future bring?
(Mauro) Hard to tell. The future is a mystery, just like music. The only thing we know is that we will keep on writing music because we couldn’t live without it. And this is what we want to infuse to those who listen to our music: our never ending passion in every single note we play.
