GUARDIANS OF TIME has one of these names that bring me back to that very first wave of power metal. ©2015 Anders Ekdahl
How hard was it to come up with a band name and how does the name fit the music?
-It is a long time since we came up with that name, we were kids back than! But we spent a long time finding that name, so yes, it was difficult. Does the name fit our music? Yes, I think it does. We have created a “mythology” surrounding
the “”Guardians of Time”, and and if you care to read our lyrics you we find some cool storys about these caracters.
As I am new to your band perhaps a short introduction might be in order?
-Guardians of Time is a Norwegian heavy metal band. We started way back in -98, and have since released 4 albums. Our latest album was “Rage and Fire”, released this summer.
As I am no musician I have no idea how it works, but how do you make your own music based on what influences you? What parts do you pick?
-Our song usually start out with a guitar riff or a vocal line. It is kind of hard to explain how a guitar riff is created… I guess we just keep fooling around with the guitar until something cool comes up. Then we keep refining it until we have a great riff. Sometimes it just appears out of nowhere, sometimes we must work a lot on it. If it start out with a vocal line, you have to find some cords that fits. Sometimes it’s just cords, sometimes the cord progression evolves into a riff. Than we put different parts together, and keep rearranging them until we have a kick-ass metal song!
When you are in a band does it feel lkke you are a part of a worldwide movement?
-A worldwide movement? NO! We are just five guiys having fun, haha! There is no secret movement taking over the world! If it is, than let me know, I want to be a part of it! But seriously, being in a band is great! They are my best friends and my second family. I can always count on them!
How important is it that you look the part in promo shots and stuff? How important is the graphic side of the band?
-It is of course very important! Our music is our sound, everything else is our “image” and “looks”. Everything is connected. The cover artwork, the band photos, our website, the stage presence….everything must reflect our music and the way we want people to perceive us.
What would you say influences your lyrics? How important are they?
-The lyrics are very important. Except our debut album, all our records are concept albums featuring stories about the “Guardians of Time”. Hopefully some of our fans will dive into the stories and find another layer to our music.
Our lyrics are influenced by books, video games, sci-fi movies, comic books, etc.
Is the album as relevant today as it was in the 70s and 80s? Is digital killing the album?
-The album is still very much relevant today. It is a way of getting attention to your band and your music. It will never be as important as it was before the internet, and the physical format is getting less important all the time. Is digital killing the album? Yes, I think it is. Albums will still be recorded in the future of course, but I think most albums will be released in digital format only.
Where will the future of format end – digital verses physical verses whatever?
-It seems like more and more people are getting interrested in vinyl, which is great. But I think the digital format will be the ultimate winner in the end. Only collecters buy records nowadays.
How much of a touring entity are you guys? What is a live experience with you like?
-We have been touring Europe 6 times the last 3 years, in addition to festivals and other jobs, so I guess you can call us a “touring entity”. We love touring and playing live, and our performance reflects that. We always give 100% on stage, and will do whatever we can to rock the house and turn the concert into a heavy metal party!
What lies in the future?
-New albums, new tours, new festivals and world domination (with a little help from the secret “worldwide movement”)!
