HALO CREATION come out of Austria. Cannot think of too many Austrian metal bands that really has made an impression lately. So it is with some great pleasure that I welcome this lot to Battle Helm. ©2015 Anders Ekdahl
How hard was it to come up with a band name and how does the name fit the music?
Eva: It took quite a while til we came up with the name Halo Creation. At first I only came up with the word „Halo“, because I thought about the album „Halo Of Blood“ of Children Of Bodom, and we liked the sound of „Halo“. And then we all together thought about what name we can make out of that, and then we chose „Creation“.
The name fits the music, cause it sounds strong and powerful, also a bit misterious, just like our music. And its also a very fitting name for a Death Metal Band of course.
As I am new to your band perhaps a short introduction might be in order?
Eva: We are a death metal band from Vienna, Austria. We started in 2014, and in the summer of the same year, we recorded our Demo CD. After that, we played our first live shows, for example with bands like Graveworm, or Illdisposed. We are playing very strong, powerful and tough metal music, but mixed with outstanding melodies. In summer of this year, we will enter the studio to record our first album.
As I am no musician I have no idea how it works, but how do you make your own music based on what influences you? What parts do you pick?
Thibaud: Well, first of all we don`t pick any part, at least not deliberately, I must say! About the composition process, it rather depends on my mood than on what I listen to. My musical influences do play an important role; they indeed provide the essence of Death Metal. But, for instance, listening to an Incantation’s song one day will not bring me trying to write a similar song. I try instead to develop some atmospheres and, simply said, express myself with my instrument. Sometimes a melody comes to my mind and then I elaborate a song on that. This was the case for “Through The Looking Glass”, for example. When I don’t have a melody in mind, I usually know the direction or atmosphere I want to develop in a song beforehand. Then I just keep on playing until I get the right evil thing!
When you are in a band does it feel lkke you are a part of a worldwide movement?
Well, kind of sure, cause we are a part of the whole metal scene, and it doesn`t matter how big or small this part is, everything is kind of connected.
How important is it that you look the part in promo shots and stuff? How important is the graphic side of the band?
Eva: It is very important, even more, when you are a not so well known band, because the first impression what people get, when they see you online, are your pictures, and if those look like crap, they probably won`t listen to your stuff. But when the optic elements are well done, like an eyecatcher, people are more likely to click on your page. So for me, it is also very important that I don`t look like „everyday life“ on pictures and also on live shows, cause in my opinon this is boring, and of course you are representing something and you want to do a show, so you should also create a look which is unique and fits to that. Also graphic layouts, for merch stuff and albums, are important, at first you always see the things.
What would you say influences your lyrics? How important are they?
Eva: There are a lot of influences, sometimes it is a movie, or a thrilling/horrifying story I`ve heard, could be fantasy or real. And themes like mortality, tragically elements, or also the demand for freedom are big parts in the lyrics. They are important, cause they can be very powerful, and so they can turn a song into a even more tough and strong piece of art.
Is the album as relevant today as it was in the 70s and 80s? Is digital killing the album?
Eva: Of course it is not that relevant, cause in fact, you don`t need to buy it if you wanna listen to it. So yes, it is killing it, there are not so many people left who buy albums regularly.
Where will the future of format end – digital verses physical verses whatever?
Leo: The trend is going towards digital, the CD is dying, cause everyone buys their stuff on itunes, or amazon. Vinyl is aspiring at the moment, some people what to listen to that sound again, but still, all in all, it is a small part. The future lies in digital sales, and Halo Creation, of course, will consider that!
How much of a touring entity are you guys? What is a live experience with you like?
Eva: We are now playing regularly in Austria, but of course we want to get out there and play more shows in more different countries!
A live experience with us, is a very powerful experience. Cause on stage, we all give our everything for the show, and the crowd can see and feel that. It is always a very tough and strong metal show, with a powerful sound on stage. It should make the people in the crowd forget about other shit in life, and just enjoy the power of a real death metal show.
What lies in the future?
Eva: In summer of this year, we will enter the studio to record our first album! And after this, we are going to play more live shows, and we hope that you can see us on tour soon!
