HARKANE has one of these names that even though you don’t know what it means it sounds cool. ©2016 Anders Ekdahl
You have one of these names that tells me that some thought has been involved in the choice. How hard was it to come up with the name?
-The choice of name was quite simple, we were inspired by the word “arcane” which means hidden, mysterious as our lyrics are, and we made it unique by changing the spelling while maintaining the pronunciation.
Could you give us a short introduction to the latest album?
-EXTENSUS is a self-produced EP, a collection of our oldest songs. We wanted to fix our sound with this job for work better on a full-length soon.
What would you say have been the single greatest influence on your sound?
-This is a difficult question. Everyone of us has one, it is for this reason that our sound has reached its complexity. However, for sure extreme metal and classical music too!
What is the metal scene like in your area? Do you feel that you are a part of a scene?
-The local scene is thriving and diverse, but unfortunately there are few spaces where to play. In Italy, as you know, people listen quite different kind of music! Harkane plays for a year and a half but we were part of the local scene in a short time.
Something I have often wondered about is if you feel that you are part of something bigger and greater when you play in a band, that you are part of a movement sort of?
– Playing in a band your favorite music makes you happy, and this is already a great thing. If you can involve and excite other people with it then you are doing it well. We hear the comments of the people at our shows, they want our CD and they come back the next live. Maybe talking about topics so far from reality helps someone to go out for a moment from real life … And that’s good!
When you play the sort of metal you play I guess you cannot have birds and bees on the cover of your album? What is a great album cover to you?
-No, no, no cute puppies in fact! We really like the covers depicting nature, but also artwork that seem paintings. We think that the sobriety and elegance, after all, are always the best. Therefore no tawdry things!
What is your opinion on digital verses physical? Is digital killing music?
-Digital can help the music, progress cannot be stopped and internet is the fastest and easiest way to spread the music. However it is also a way to “steal it”. But who supports a band can’t give up the physical format and the smell of the paper!
What kind live scene is there for bands like yours?
– We think that the live scene for bands like ours will never die, because the stage is the ideal place to enjoy extreme metal.
When you play live is it a happening or do you see it more as a party?
-We strongly believe in what we do. We try to be more professional as possible and to create a memorable show. We make parties with friends or in the pub, not wearing blacks hoods and with face painting!
What would you like to see the future bring?
-We have recently changed our drummer, now we have a real war machine! In our near future there are some live gigs with the new material and, later, a full length. We hope to play on important stages next summer, the preconditions are hopeful. We give you thanks for this interview, you are helping us to spread our word!
