HAUTAJAISYÖ

This week I am doing a Inverse Records interview special. If you haven’t checked out the quality metal this Finnish label brings us now is the time. I present to you HAUTAJAISYÖ. Anders Ekdahl ©2017

As I am not at all familiar with your band perhaps you could introduce it?
-Hautajaisyö (Funeral Night) Is a Finnish metal band that was formed few years ago to the burning remains of our old band REDEYE. We play a mix of melancholy thrash & Melodic Death metal and you can hear our love to Black metal on few Songs. We try to Make our own style of music that Is depressive, brutal and you can moshpit to it. All the songs are on Finnish and lyrics tells storys of mental problems, suicide, depression and death. We are making our second album to be released this year and we have released two singles from that album.

How hard was it for you guys to pick a name? What had that name have to have to fit your music?
-Well no because i stole it from a Song of My favorite band ”Horna”. We wanted Finnish name and a name with ” some Death on it” so Hautajaisyö is a fitting name For The band, eventhough some people think we play more doomish Songs.

What band(s) was it that turned you on to the kind of music you play? What inspires you today?
-Well i dont think we have any main inspiraation. We just try to mix elements that we love in to our music. But lots of our music comes from our old bands remains. REDEYE was Death/thrash. After few Demos The focus moved More to Death metal and More melodic stuff. New Songs started being More darker and depressive. You can hear it on The last REDEYE EP that has lots of similiarity to Hautajaisyö first album. The style chanced so much so we decise to chanced name and i made new lyrics in Finnish. Hautajaisyö was born.

What is the advantages/disadvantages of CD and vinyl these days of internet promotion where digital seems to be king?
-I like The digital age, because It is so easy to get your music to people. And because its so easy there are many great bands to discover. As a new band you have to work hard If you want to rise and get your ”spotlight”. I think vinyl And CD IS now For The true fans and Collectors. I like to support bands by going gigs, buying Merchant, vinyls and i always support The smaller bands selfreleases. I know where The money goest.

I use Spotify and Deezer but only as compliment to buying CDS (it’s easier to just have your phone or pad when your out) but I fear that soon music as we know it will be dead and buried. What are your worries as a band?
-Now days to have to Be working all The time, make new Songs, videos and new ways to market your stuff. Because music business is chancing lots of The ”poser” bands are quiting and that IS a good thing. The Haunted vocalist Marco Are Said on a interview that: now that we all have ”real” Jobs we can do what ever we want with our band and play The show that we like to play. I share this ideology with him.

What part does art work and lay out play? Any message that you want to bring forth with it?
-We are on this lucky position that we have our own artist. Our good friend Minttu Harju has made all our artwork. We like her style and she likes working with us. I belive artwork is important and It should fit the music. I hope some day we can Make Even few vinyls of our older work so that Minttus artwork gets More noticed.

Is it a whole different way to promote a band today with all these social media channels? Or do you go about doing promotion the same way? Playing live and word of mouth?
-You have to Be always active and always making new stuff. You Also have to think ”out side of The box” when trying to get your band noticed. Like we have sponsored a rpg webstore, we are on a boardgame, made a Song For American football team, we put lots of effort on our music videos and try to Be ”everywhere”. Its great when you get people who dont like metal to our shows and get them interested in our music and lyrics.

Do you feel like you are a part of a scene, locally, nationally and internationally?
-Heh…i dont know..we are really UG and have More fans in other contrys than in Finland. But this year has been really good so far For getting new people like our stuff Also in Finland.

How much of a touring band are you? Is touring/gigging still a great way of spreading the word of the band?
-We love to play live! Its our passion! This year has been really good! We played our first gig outside of finland. And we are Playing our first festival gig. Also we have few gigs in our hometown where we have always Been ”too metal” to get any good gigs. We have 5 gigs coming and few More may come. So things are good!

What will the future bring?
-Our second album is almost ready. We just released second single from that album. Third single is coming on few months with a new music video. Video Will Be super depressive because The song tells about eutanasia and a old woman who wants to die but cant. As i Said we have lots of gigs coming and just started The work on getting gigs in 2018. We also have some new Songs that need to Be finished and lets see If we Will record them on 2018. Must stay busy before you die.
