HEREJÍA

With so many cool bands out there to check out I offer you some minor guidance by introducing you to HEREJÍA. Anders Ekdahl ©2019

How hard was it to come up with a band name and how does the name fit the music?
-The name put Ruben in 2011. Herejía refers to the freedom of choice in the face of established norms and the band has that attitude towards the norms that govern this society and our lives, which they reflect in their lyrics.

What was it that made you want to be in a band in the first place?
-When I was young and I saw how well the bands and leather clothes they used were doing on stage, I thought I wanted to do the same thing. The music I discovered when I first heard heavy metal caught me and decided to play it whenever I could and the way was to be part of a band, that pushed me to find one.

As I am no musician I have no idea how it works, but how do you make your own music based on what influences you? What parts do you pick?
-Our way of composing is somewhat peculiar, Ruben begins composing some riff or some guitar line and from there kike depending on the style, begins to mount a voice line, both things come together and once the song has a skeleton kike He puts lyrics and is arranged among all the members contributing each their ideas.
The lyrics are written entirely by the vocalist (kike), It is not a conceptual album so I would not dare to describe it with a single theme, there are themes of all kinds, from songs about stories of “classic” books like “the trip more long “or” wants to catch you “to topics that speak of feelings like” now I “or” I am as I am “, even a hymn to heavy metal as it is” forever “, in short there is a bit of everything, like life hahahaha, it’s a very heterogeneous album.

When you are in a band does it feel like you are a part of a worldwide movement?
-World is perhaps saying too much, we are a humble band and at most we aspire to be part of a movement in Spain, although in Latin America we are already heard and they want us to play there.

How important is it that you look the part in promo shots and stuff? How important is the graphic side of the band?
-I suppose that it is an advantage to make you known, it is part of the work you have to do if you want to expand your music. The band makes a video on each album (we have two posted on youtube, despierta y resurrección) we also have facebook, instagran etc. …

What would you say influences your lyrics? How important are they?
-It is not a conceptual album so I would not dare to describe it with a single theme, there are themes of all kinds, from songs about stories of “classic” books such as “the longest trip (ítaca)” or “te quiere atrapar(wants to catch you)” inspired in Jack the Ripper, a resurrection that speaks of experiences beyond death, to topics that speak of feelings like “now I” or “I am as I am”, to a heavy metal hymn such as “forever”, in short there is a bit of everything, like life itself hahahaha, it is a very heterogeneous album.

Is the album as relevant today as it was in the 70s and 80s? Is digital killing the album?
-An album today is practically unimportant, except for heavy metal fans who continue to attach great importance to everything that surrounds our bands, such as t-shirt albums etc …
Nowadays, with the arrival of the internet and the ease that people have to access music, the “magic” of the 80’s in which you bought an album and stayed with your friends to listen to it has been lost.
They are not good times for the lyric
Digital is not only killing the album, it is killing music, nowadays anyone can make records with a computer and correction programs without learning music and selling millions of copies.

Where will the future of format end – digital verses physical verses whatever?
-There is a large majority of people who prefer digital format, especially because you can download it for free, but there are still people left, especially in the world of heavy metal, which prefers physical format, although these are few in comparison, but we still resist.

How much of a touring entity are you guys? What is a live experience with you like?
-In the band we are 5 very different members but united by a dream “to play our music in front of as many people as possible”. We really like to go on tour in our van, eat together, sleep together and especially play live, it is a To experience that if you are music despite being hard it is very intense and fun, it disconnects you from your daily life obligations.
What would guide us the most would be to play music festivals.

What lies in the future?
-If you are referring to the band, right now we are immersed in the full tour of the album in Spain and we are already composing new songs for a future album that we would like to record if we managed to raise enough money. As I told you before, we are a humble band of workers who they dedicate themselves to this for their love of heavy metal, sacrificing time and money.
