I am pretty blind when it comes to Greek metal. I will happily accept anything as long as it is Greek. And since I haven’t had one bad Greek metal experience so far I doubt that HILDR VALKYRIE will be the first. Anders Ekdahl ©2018
I am a word buff so when I find a band name that excites me I want to know the reason behind the choice. So how did you pick your name?
-First of all thank you for granting me the chance to have an interview with you for Battle Heim Magazine!
Why I chose this name for my one-woman band; I will get straight to the point, the first reason is that I am a believer of the Old Faith, I am an Odinist, and so I wanted to choose a name to propound this Cosmotheasis. Secondly I chose Hildr Valkyrie for its meaning, Hildr means Battle and it’s something that express me a lot, in deeper analysis I would like to keep it in silence, as I do it for all these years since “2003”. I do not believe that this concerns anyone except myself and there isn’t any particular reason to reveal that.
There are so many genres and sub-genres today that it is hard to keep track of them all. So what was it that made you pick the style you play?
Yes, indeed; they are so many for any kind of taste!
Speaking for Hildr Valkyrie, it is something that comes from inside me, I can’t control it, I can’t change it. I do not think that an underground artist will ever play a genre that does not comes from the Heart, as far as there are no big labels that pushes the artist to go with the flow or any kind of trend that comes up.
What influences you in creating your music? What is/has been the single greatest influence?
-My inner need to compose music, consider that I am a self-taught musician and it is twice as hard to compose a song and bring it to life. My greatest influence was and is Vratyas Vakyas from Falkenbach, who I consider him as my mentor too. I grew up with his music, and this is very obvious in my composes.
How important is it to have a message as a band?
-I believe that in the world of metal, you won’t find easy a band that does not supports a kind of message, at least with the bands we grew up with; of course I can’t put my hands into fire for the nowadays scene, cause there are thousands of bands which I wish I could follow, but definitely this is not possible.
So, yes, I find it very important for a band to carry a message and I believe that bands holds responsibility for the messages they share to the people, especially our music which is defined and grew within the years because of this.
Is image an important factor to the bands appearance?
-I will be honest, yes, it is! In nowadays, the appearance is much important if you want to be “famous”. Some people making millions just because they sell their appearance, they do not have to have any kind of talent, just being not ordinary is just enough. We are living in the “century of image”. Fast and easy to “swallow” information’s for the eyes and furthermore the brain.
As it comes to Hildr Valkyrie, except from some artistic pictures that I released throughout the years, I try to keep a low profile cause my intense is to attract people who actually likes my music, not because of my appearance or looks, I am not a doll that you can put it on the shelf, I am a musician. I rather to have few, but true supporters.
Maybe the revolutionary message of nowadays is to reclaim the quality of the essential against the fast dying images.
How important is it to have an album cover that stands out to grab people’s attention in this day and age?
-Again, I find it very important as it comes especially for the first listeners. That’s why there are artists for that and gets payed for. Otherwise the covers would be blank, with a logo of any kind of fonts, no paintings, no photos, no art, just a blank sheet with the name of the band, the titles of the songs and other details.
To someone who really likes the band’s music, I do not think that a fancy cover matters so much, but in the metal scene, a cover is a “must” and can also be referred as an intro, a prologue for what you are about to listen to. Further more cover art in metal music is a separated artistic chapter on its own, mind my words for the years to come when mankind will need to remember a new renaissance again with the reclaiming the Greeks, the Romans their art and philosophy for the sparks of the quality in art during our years metal art will be a great chapter.
What kind of respect do you get from your local scene?
-With the Hellenic scene, as far, never faced any problem, on the contrary I have already worked with 6 Hellenic bands and more are about to follow. It is very hard for a woman to be respectful in the world of men, but truly; as far, I did not had any problems or at least nothing bad came to my ears.
How massive is it to get response from places you have never heard of?
-First of all, it is definitely very beautiful thing. It is wonderful of how music travels through people and get messages from the other side of the planet from places you never thought that even your spirit ever would be able to go to! As it comes to the numbers of responses, for my standards are quite a lot!
Is playing live still a great way to get new fans to discover you?
-Of course it is, but speaking for Hildr Valkyrie, being a truly one-woman band it is not easy to go on stage. I do not count any members, I only have/had sessions as far, in the new album “Revealing the Heathen Sun” for example I had the precious help of Jan Twothousandarrows who played the guitars and bass plus drum programing, furthermore he is from Italy, and I am from Hellas (Greece), neither the two of us cannot do any rehearsals in real life to be bonded for having a live on stage. So, for performing on stage, I need to find musicians and start bonding from zero point in order to archive this.
What does the future have in its womb?
-In the near future, the first that I see possible coming faster, will be the first release from our new black metal project, called “Solis in Antris” with a special Hellenic guitarist and me on vocals. Furthermore, a new album in the main future for Hildr Valkyrie and more collaborations to come!
Thank you very much for your time and questions!
