KARDINAL SIN have a new(ish) album out that I really like. So an interview had to happen. Anders Ekdahl ©2018
When you look back and see how far you have come what do you think of this crazy journey so far and where the heck will it take us?
-It has been a long and rocky road but lots of fun. There are so many good metalbands out there now so the competion is real hard ,but we keep on fighting since we have loyal fans and get good reviews on what we do. We work hard and try to take this to a higher level and then also get more invites to bigger festivals.
I often wonder how people discover that they can do what they do. How did you discover that you can sing and play instruments?
-I started plying the guitar when i was 7 but started to practice harder when i was 12-13 y and bought my first electric guitar. All of us started pretty early. It was the metal music back in the 80s that got us in to start playing and singing. I guess Europe, Universe, Candlemass etc had a big influence on us since they were from the same town (Upplands Väsby).
When did it become a revelation that you can do this and maybe get paid for having fun, instead of just putting out all the money?
-We still put a lot of money on this since it is hard to get paid nowadays when you dont sell so many records anymore. We try to reach at least breakeven on what we do and don´t take gigs that will cost us money(trip, logistic, food etc).
When you spend an amount of your life on a band does it ever feel like you have wasted time, that you have fought one too many windmills?
-I think all of us have had that thought some time to quit ,but then you think back of all the fun we have had it all makes it worth to keep on.This is like our second family. After all this is our hobby and what we do on our sparetime. Everyone needs to gather positive energy. Some guys play golf on their sparetime and we play metal.
No matter how small or big you were as a band you will leave a legacy behind you. How do you want people to treat this legacy?
-I hope people will keep on listening on our albums(on vinyl or cd) and remembering our liveperformances.
Is digital taking away the mystery of waiting for a new album now that you can upload as soon as you have written a song?
-Yes!!I still remember when i was a kid and took the train to Stockholm to buy a new album from one of my favourite bands. On the way home i studied the album and read the lyrics. Today its not the same thing when you stream the album.
How important is image in separating you from all the million different styles of metal there is out there?
-We allways think of our image and try to stick out from the mass but its hard when everything is done allready. We put a lot of energy to do a good performance and never go on stage in regular clothes. We put a lot of effort on our logos and graphics etc so it looks professional.
Do you deal in different topics lyrically or do you keep to one, just using different variations?
-We try to have alot of variation on everything we do. We are all involved in the writing process so we get some variations just because of that.
Do you consider yourself a live artist or do you like to spend most of the time secluded in a studio?
-Deffinitly a live artist! We love to do live performances and allways give 100% on every gig.
Neither of us like the recording process but it is allways fun to hear the result in the end.
How much of a touring band are you guys? What memories do you take with you?
-We dont do so many liveperformances as we should even though we love it. Mostly because its so hard to get the economy together. Most places want bands to play allmost for free and we dont do that anymore. We have alot of crazy stories thou and fun memories from places we have been at.
What does the future hold?
-We are currently working hard on our next album that will be recorded this winter. We will propably also release a new video before that. We are also working on our liveperformance and doing some changes in our livegear. We will do a big live performance in our hometown together with Universe at November.
