KRATOS

I love when a band choose a band name that isn’t just the same old song and dance routine. KRATOS is a Greek word that really works as a band name. Anders Ekdahl ©2016

How important is the band’s name in giving out the right kind of vibe?
We believe it’s very important for a band to choose the right name for it. After all the name should represents the key word for the band. It’s the deep substance of what a band has to say and to show to the world. Of course, sometimes the name is chosen because some word sounds good but even in these cases, it was observed that there is a link between the concept or the specific vibe and the name of the band.
Regarding our band’s name, “Kratos” is a Greek word meaning force, strength or power. We relate the meaning of Kratos with the strength that is in each human being, the strength to build but also to destroy, the mental power to surge above negativity but also the dualism of the human beings, the universal force that keeps us moving on.
It’s funny and interesting in the same time that the name Kratos was chosen in ’96, when Daniel, the founder of the band was 19 years old back then. I bet he never thought then what will play his band 20 years later. The subconscious doesn’t sleep!
Do we choose the name or the name chooses us?

What was it that made you want to do the band?
-Being raised in a family of musicians, Dan was surrounded by music from an early age. So in 1988, he had founded his first band…He was very young at that time but all ideas regarding the founding of a band and also some musical stuff came so naturally.…. In ’96 , we are already talking about his third band named Kratos. We keep good memories from that period and it was a very interesting history back then. Not necessarily pleasant memories, although there were certainly enjoyable and lovely childhood moments, but regarding the communism period, there was no access to information of any kind neither to musical instruments and stuff…neither to freedom of expression.

What is your definition of the music you play?
-It is melodic metal with symphonic elements, dynamic passages, theatrical performaces, with intriguing and a bit cynical lyrics.. We call it dark metal!
We use a lot of classical instruments; we love how the sound of classic gives warmth to metal music. If you listened to our album, you have probably noticed we use also an anvil on our tracks. We play at this anvil in our live shows and I suppose is one of our spectacular elements.
The concept behind the voices lines shows the psychological struggle from the human beings. In most of our songs, the female voice is slightly “acid” as a conceptual approach even if it sounds gentle and warm. It’s tricky! Beautiful outside, annoying, upsetting inside!
Speaking of our album “Arlechino” released on 06th of May this year, under the signature of the Finnish label Inverse Records, the concept for this album is focusing on drama, life contrasts and inner struggles of the soul, a psychological puzzle “like an Arlechino act”.
We invite all the metalheads to listen and to tell us their opinion about our music!

How do you arrange the tracks? Is there a method to how you arrange the songs on a record?
-As a conceptual album, the order of the songs is progressive, following “Arlechino” story line. All is about the concept and all songs are linked to each other, creating the whole picture.

Where do you find your inspiration to create?
– The inspiration can be found everywhere, you just have to see it! From every little being of this planet, from nature, the fauna and flora, to the human beings, the relationship between people, the drama of each person, their dreams, their dissapointments, their goals, their hopes…all around us is inspiration! I think you can find inspiration in every breath you take and every feeling. Then…are our own life experiences …
From our first demo and LP to our new album “Arlechino” our inspiration was focused on the pshychological side of human being existence.
The lyrics from “Arlechino” are focused on the three evolutionary phases of the human spirit. First one exposes the lie, falsehood, hollowness, deceitfulness and strong egos which are causing suffering to others.
The second phase creates an image about the positive part of humanity, the good we are able to exhibit and the inner power of free will.
The third and final phase represents the ether, universal, macro-cosmic stage.
In fact, the album is a transposition of universal evolution of the human spirit. Each song represents a different face of the human being but in its entire, the album is a window to the Awakening of the human consciousness; from selfishness, malice, “humans playing with other souls”, the whole picture turns to the role of the people on this planet, the achievement of the spiritual level.

How important is the graphic side of the band? How much thought goes into art work etc.?
-The image of the band is very important and it is reflected in lyrics, music as well as graphic artwork. To achieve an image of perfection which describes your style you first have to surround yourself with artists that believe in the message that our music sends. We teamed up with Costin Chioreanu which is an amazing graphic artist and created
the artwork for Arlechino.
On the album cover you can notice the bloodied wings which mean our aspiration to become angelical figures.
Yet why the blood? Simply because as humans we use all means necessary to achieve what we want and sometimes, unfortunately too many times, that comes at a high cost generating in its path destruction, war and crimes. Our soul gets lost in a never-ending battle with itself and we become blinded by the angelical image which does not fit our human
nature. To cover our failures we place a mask which in fact becomes a burden, a sort of anvil we will have to carry for the rest of our lives simply for trying to achieve the unreachable.

Do you find that there is a greater freedom in working with digital than working with physical?
-You can say probably that there is a greater freedom working in digital but we will always prefer the physical format. We consider that the physical format is more personal, a direct contact with the listener. It’s a good feeling when you hold an album in your hand, you browse it, read the lyrics and look at the cover art. That’s why we have chosen for our album “Arlechino” both digital and physical format.

Are there any limitations to digital? Can you do everything you like?
-If you want to do a comparison between digital and analog recordings, yes, I think there are some advantages and disadvantages! On analog recordings, the sound is warmer and there are some saturations that you can not get with digital but in digital you have more audio plugins and software, tools, creative things that you can not find in analog.

Is there a scene to speak of for a band like yours? Where do you fit in?
-Trying to fit our music to a specific scene limits its potential.

What does the future hold?
-We can only talk about our plans in the near future that include a promotional tour and releasing an official video for one or more songs from our new album “Arlechino”.
