MASQUERA DI FERRO

We might be one as Europeans but when it really matters we are closest to ourselves. Which is why there are still bands like Spain’s MASQUERA DI FERRO that are new to me. Anders Ekdahl ©2017

When you formed the band with what intention did you do so? How easy was it to pick up a thread as to where your sound is going?
-We intended to be able express ourselves. That was our commitment. We decided to share with others our music ideas, our thoughts about this world and all the emotions deriving from life.
We were not really anxious about our sound and we don’t have any complexes on that. That’s why you cannot easily include our music in a particular genre.
It was a matter of paying attention and hearing our internal voice. Nothing is stable and we always seek for fresh ideas.

As I haven’t recorded anything I have no idea what that is like but are you ever 100% satisfied? How pleased are you with your latest recording?
-We had a great experience. Our latest recording took place in Italy and the outcome is really outstanding. Our sound is by far better from our first work. We are very excited and we expect the audience’s view.

To me a band name is the first thing I notice. If it feels cool then I’ll check the band out. How do you explain the meaning of the band name?
-Lepers used to wear iron masks! They were excluded from the organized societies because proper citizens were feeling abomination about them. So in general, we want το cauterize hypocrisy as nowadays we all use masks, pretending to have different selves

How important is image to the band? What impression do you want the fans to get of the band?
-Not really so important as the creative part. I think we are a bunch of hobos seeking for the truth in life, showing respect to what is to be respected and trying to transform in notes and lyrics the simplest things around us.

I am a huge fan of LP art work. How important is it to have the right art work for your album?
-It is very important actually and that’s why it took us a lot of time to end up with our artwork. Our friend Alexis Antypas did a great work and managed to draw our music!

We live in a superficial world today where you don’t exist if you are not on Youtube and Facebook. Has social media been only beneficial in socializing with the fans or is there a down side to it too?
-As we don’t have a lot of means to communicate to others we use this platforms but if you ask me to tell you the truth, although they seem good for bands that are not popular, finally help all the garbage music to survive and keep the nice things in obscurity.

Something I often wonder about is when you play in a band does it feel like you are a part of a massive community?
-That would be the ideal. To belong somewhere that you share dreams, thoughts and feelings with others. But as music is our common language, we feel connected with everyone.

How important is it to be signed to label today? What can they do
That you cannot do on your own?
-It is surely beneficial to have a label supporting you from just being on your own. We have already distinguished the final outcome of the recordings and we expect the benefits from the worldwide distribution. We are in the very beginnings and we have to wait and see about that, while doing the right moves.

How much of a touring band are you guys? How hard is it to get gigs outside of your borders?
-It is very tough and that why our label is very important. Wormhole death, our label, can achieve things that we could never achieve on our own.

What will the future bring?
-The future will bring a futuristic new album that we already work on. Tasos and Fanis have a lot of ideas and we experiment on them. It is going to be really different.
