MATALOBOS. Taste it. Let it roll round in your mouth when you say. Doesn’t it sound cool saying it? I think it is a brilliant name. Cool to say and easy to remember. Anders Ekdahl ©2016
How important is the band’s name in giving out the right kind of vibe?
-Band name is the first impression or approach for any listener, is what represent the message and view of the band, for us, Matalobos, being the colloquial name of a poisonous flower, means how danger could be something full of beauty as music.
What was it that made you want to do the band?
-Passion for music and the interest of playing this genre in particular (doom/death), there was a need of expression not found in other genres, also there was this opportunity to share this with some great musician friends.
What is your definition of the music you play?
-Melancholic, dark, emotive and direct feelings shaped into notes and beats.
How do you arrange the tracks? Is there a method to how you arrange the songs on a record?
-We do a collaborative work, first of all Eduardo, come with some guitar ideas and demos, further I add to those riffs some drum beats and changes, finally bass, vocals and maybe some strings or sequences gets alive. We don’t like to be driven in a methodic way, the more natural and from the heart the ideas born the more satisfaction we gain at the end.
Where do you find your inspiration to create?
-Daily situations, seeing life passing by, also some horror movies, mostly those from the 80’s and previous, myths, legends, any story that left you with a hard shiver.
How important is the graphic side of the band? How much thought goes into art work etc.?
-Art and graphics are a very important complement for our music, we always think about being a whole art piece, our vocalist being a designer, takes lots of care in visuals, that’s why we try to get different editions of our records like a tape limited edition for the first EP and a wood made black box edition for our latest album, we also have collaborated with important graphic artists of our region.
Do you find that there is a greater freedom in working with digital than working with physical?
-Digital it’s a good tool talking of promotion and reaching audience, but physical is the best and traditional work, more nostalgic one. Let’s face it, freedom depends of each one, there are no barriers when you love what you do.
Are there any limitations to digital? Can you do everything you like?
-For sure you can have a lot of approach with digital media, without limitations, from streaming your music to share a video clip, announcing upcoming dates, etc.
Is there a scene to speak of for a band like yours? Where do you fit in?
-We can proudly say that we have a good Doom/gothic or death metal scene in Mexico, lots of good bands around, we never expected to fit this way, we also don´t like to just be stuck in a metal or music sector, our music could be very versatile. We have shared stage with many bands from distinct genres, from black metal to thrash.
What does the future hold?
.More composition, more material, that’s what we stand for. Looking forward also for new dates, a proper national tour an in a not too far future, European shows.
