MONO INC is a German band that are bigger at home than they are abroad, but that could easily change by you reading this interview and then go and buy their albums. Anders Ekdahl ©2016
You have one of these names that does not really tell what kind of metal you play. How hard was it to come up with the name?
-To be honest: finding a cool name for a band has always been a pain in the ass. In all the years with all bands I played in it was always a drama. And just when you thought you found one, there’s always somebody in the band who doesn’t like it. With MONO INC. we didn’t have that problem – everybody agreed right away.
When you formed the band did you have a clear intent on what it was that you wanted to do?
-Oh yes! We founded the band to be able to do what we want to do. So we financed and recorded our first album on our own and then presented it to some record companies. They all said basically the same: yes, it’s quite cool, but… you should change this and that. That was exactly what we expected so we pulled out our plan “b”: we founded our own label as well, because we did not what anybody to tell us what we have to do. That was the best decision we ever made, I guess. After we reached Top #3 in the german charts we got calls from all major labels and I must admit it felt great to say: thanks, but NO, thank you.
How has the success of Rammstein affected the way people react to bands that are singing in their native tongue?
-I think RAMMSTEIN is so special and presumably the best show on this planet. That would have worked out in every language 😉
After them I haven’t really heard of another German singing band that comes anywhere close….
There is this talk of a music scene but when you are a band and you play the kind of music that you play do you feel that you are a part of a scene? What is the scene like in your area?
-Germany has quite a big gothic scene. These people are very open minded to new acts and what I really appreciate: they are listening to the lyrics. So when I look in the eyes of our fans when we are on stage I feel like at home. I can be who I want to be.
Do you notice that there is an anticipation for you to release an album? Have you built a large enough following for people to eagerly await a new album?
-I am proud to say: YES! Since the last three albums all reached the Top 10 our audience got bigger and bigger.
When you play the sort of music you play what kind of art work do you feature on the cover of your albums? What is a great album cover to you?
-For me a good artwork has to be simply beautiful, a little mystique and it’s got to have our name on it
Back in the days you had to trade tapes if you wanted to hear new unheard of bands. Today you are just a click away from discovering new acts. Do you feel that this development in some ways will do more harm than good in the long run, that it will eventually kill off music as we know it?
– I am a child of the eighties and I think that in the old days there was much more interaction with others when we discovered a new band. And since you couldn’t just post a link on facebook, it stayed cult for much longer. I loved that.
I get the feeling that fans that are true to a band, is a lost thing with the easy access to music these days. Do you feel that this is a bad thing or are there any positive aspects of it at all?
-That really depends on the style of music you play. The mainstream people jump from one act to an another in the speed of light. Rock- Metal- or Gothicfans are more faithful: once they love a band it mostly takes more than one bad album to lose them.
When you play live is it a happening or do you see it more as a party?
-Our live shows are an experience 😉 For me a good concert is to share all sorts of feelings with the fans. We smile, dance, cry and yell together.
Togetherness is what it’s all about!
What would you like to see the future bring?
-First I would like to see Donald Trump not to become president of the US. Second I would like to see all people treating each other with a minimum of respect. And after that I wouldn’t mind if MONO INC. would conquer the world…
