MORBID STENCH

South/Central America. The melting pot for all that is old school? MORBID STENCH sure has the right vibe for being ultra cool. Anders Ekdahl ©2017

How hard was it to come up with a band name and how does the name fit the music?
The Master Butcher – Hi…not really…Aleister came up actually with the name and the logo when we were still defining the basics for the band…at the end it was really easy because the name MORBID STENCH and the logo…are quite a powerful combination that perfectly matches our overall concept.

As I am new to your band perhaps a short introduction might be in order?
The Master Butcher – Sure…MORBID STENCH is as far as I know…the first Central American band given that it is formed by members from both, El Salvador & Costa Rica…also we are one the few bands working the Doom Death field…pretty unusual around these latitudes…and if that wouldn’t be enough…we combine DOOM elements with a conceptual approach dealing with putrefaction, decayment, stench…plus some hints of anti religious ecclesiastic stuff…pretty remarkable because most of the bands into this genre…deal with elements more related to depressive sad shits and so forth…MORBID STENCH is pure fucking dense putrefaction…

As I am no musician I have no idea how it works, but how do you make your own music based on what influences you? What parts do you pick?
The Master Butcher – Yes…well…being in different countries we use pretty much the internet…M.Q. comes up with the demo songs…I start listening them in order to define the lyrics and the phrasing…when that is done…V.K. makes the drums…I go to a studio in San Jose downtown, record the vocals and then, everything is sent to be mixed and mastered.

When you are in a band does it feel like you are a part of a worldwide movement?
The Master Butcher – Not really…I mean…I do not want to sound pretentious but we are more focused on developing our sound and style than thinking to belong to certain movement or community…

How important is it that you look the part in promo shots and stuff? How important is the graphic side of the band?
The Master Butcher – Well, is quite important because we work within an overall concept…and everything has to be defined considering that concept…otherwise you take the risk to fall in inconsistencies…you know like pretending to play old school death metal and come up with a digital full color cover…get my point?…we are of the school of thought that when you are in a band first you gotta find what will be your overall concept and proposal…based on that…everything has to be in that line…lyrics…cover…layout design…titles…and of course…band photos…so far we have not taken band pics…maybe for the album we will take some shots…but then again…they have to be aligned with our overall concept…if not…that would only mere photos without any importance.

What would you say influences your lyrics? How important are they?
The Master Butcher – The lyrics are all written by me…my main source of inspiration is the music…I start listening the demo versions and based on what the song evokes me…I start with the first ideas…then everything is put together and the song is ready…the topics with MORBID STENCH vary from irreligious themes to putrid stories of decayment…we don not have any “message” to give because our main goal is only one…PRAISE THE DOOM & GLORIFY THE PUTREFACTION…

Is the album as relevant today as it was in the 70s and 80s? Is digital killing the album?
The Master Butcher – Depends…in our case…the physical format is perfect because the people that listens the kind of stuff we do prefer much more the physical format…either if it is LP, CD or Tape…however…in other genres or sub genres just like the non metal people…the physical format is perceived as something anachronic…fortunately we have clear where we are and don’t have problems on that…we are 100% followers and worshipers of physical stuff,…IF IT’S NOT PHYSICAL…SIMPLY DOESN’T EXIST!!!

Where will the future of format end – digital verses physical verses whatever?
The Master Butcher – Both will co exist…

How much of a touring entity are you guys? What is a live experience with you like?
The Master Butcher – Not that much…so far we have only done some shows in El Salvador and Guatemala last year…the experience is pretty….hmmm…lets say…certain edhor invades the place…there are some chances to tour next year…but we will see what happens.

What lies in the future?
The Master Butcher – Well…our upcoming release called “THE BIFID TONGUE OF DOOM & DEATH” which is a 7″ split Ep with NECROGOD will be released by August of this year on Morbid Skull Recs and Evil Domain Prods…then will follow our full debut album to be out by late 2017….
