There used to be a time in the 90s when I was pretty down with the Colombian extreme metal scene. But that was then. With the help of MORDAZ I will start my resurgence. ©2016 Anders Ekdahl
Could you please introduce yourself to those of us in the dark?
-Greetings, our band’s name is Mordaz, which is a Synonym word for Sarcasm, this band was formed in Medellin Antioquia, Colombia.
It all started when I (Pamela E., Guitar player) moved to the city of Medellin and a few years back had already met Martin Naranjo – (Drummer) we got along perfectly in music taste, as also playing, so I invited him to do the drums for Putrefaction, but due to the fact that the lead singer (Valeria Escobar) still lived in Cali which is 8 hours from Medellin or 1 hour by plane and couldn’t travel frequently to rehearse we decided to stop that band and start a new one (Putrefaction finally released a 12” Vinyl in 2012 in M.P.O. France after many years of struggle). Mordaz was born in the mid of 2007, Martin and I wanted to play fast, raw, short songs with direct messages at high speed in their interpretation, without leaving behind the simple rhythms. We named or style or gender Strident Sound in Spanish called “ Sonido Extridente”. On the way then, I had met Laura Corrales – (Bassist) who also played with us at the end of Putrefaccion and continued playing with us in this new project.
Our lyrics are social-political with criticism to the aberrations of humanity, some content also anti-religions without touching satanic cult thematics cuz it would be contradictory and absurd, collapse doctrines.
So, Mordaz is formed by Laura Corrales in the bass, Pamela Escobar in the guitar and Martín Naranjo – drums and lead singer. We have until now 3 albums; the first one called ODIO released in 2009 by ourselves, the second album DETRIMENTO was released in 2012 by a Peruvian friend who has a label called Austral Holocaust, our third album PARAFILIA DECADENTE came out last year in the mid of 2015 as a split with an Italian band called DEFORMATION of a very dear friend ours called Elio. All done with our own labels. And at the moment we are waiting for our first 7” vinyl to be ready, it’s been pressed in California.
I often wonder how people discover that they can do what they do. How did you discover that you can sing and play instruments?
-Well, I have never been able to sing and play at the same time, but Martin does a great job at that, he has an amazing talent specially understanding what Laura and I want to express. We express what we want with our instruments.
When did it become a revelation that you can do this and maybe get paid for having fun?
-Actually we started doing music without thinking that we were going to get paid. We have gotten paid very few times. We really do it for fun and cuz we want to scream to the world all those things that makes us hate governments and beliefs that never change and are extremely absurd. But if we have to travel to play we do need help from the organizers in paying transportation and basic needs cuz we are not wealthy.
When you spend an amount of your life on a band does it ever feel like you have wasted time, that you have fought one too many windmills?
-No. On the contrary, we love and enjoy as much time we can spend with our bands. Playing is what makes us happier in this rotten world, making music is the only way we can feel free.
No matter how small or big you were as a band you will leave a legacy behind you. How do you want people to treat this legacy?
-We want the following generations who like our gender or style not to forget their roots and to remember that a simple rhythm can express what you want and that it is important what you say in your lyrics.
Is digital taking away the mystery of waiting for a new album now that you can upload as soon as you have written a song?
-Yes, digital has changed music a lot. It’s never going to be the same to listen to a cd than to listen to a Vinyl. We are really into the old school sound and machines. Unfortunately there isn’t a Vinyl pressing company in our country, that is why for us is harder to release vinyl’s, because we have to pay shipping, plus taxes for the material to enter the country is too much, but anyway we are trying to deal with it and we have good friends abroad that are helping us make our dream of continuing releasing vinyls in all its sizes and presentations. We rather wait and release an album than uploading immediately what we do.
How important is image in separating you from all the million different styles of metal there is out there?
-Well image is fashion. We don´t care about fashion we are just ourselves. We care more about making good music and making a difference from repetitive sounds, we think that’s what differentiate us from other genres and it has been elementary in the process of introducing our noise in the local and global scene.
Do you deal in different topics lyrically or do you keep to one, just using different variations?
-We deal with different topics not only one. We treat from hatred to religion, even human decay, psychological abuse and the unstoppable madness of humanity.
Do you consider yourself a live artist or do you like to spend most of the time secluded in a studio?
-Well, we like both as time allows it to be. But we really enjoy to play live and share with our friends.
How much of a touring band are you guys? What memories do you take with you?
-We haven’t toured yet. We have shared the stage with local bands friends of ours like REENCARNACIÓN, ORGANISMOS, CONFUSIÓN, BARBARIE MEDIEVAL, DEATH KULT, R.D.T., AVERNO, TIRO DE GRACIA, B.T.O.E (Venezuela), SEPTICEMIA, among others. In 2012 we were invited to the VII Festival Rock in Rio Negro opening to an international band called MASSACRE (USA), as also ANAL VOMIT (Peru). In 2013, a concert was held in Cali (my hometown), together with the bands REENCARNACION and CONTRA from Palmira. In 2015 we were invited to share the stage with one of the most important bands of English crust DOOM, and also with the Brazilian punk band- Rock “Juventude Maldita”. Until now we have only played in our country and we would love to tour through Europe, specially Sweden cuz most of the bands we love are from there.
What does the future hold?
-In 2016 we are waiting for our first 7” to be released by Mierdallo Records and our own labels, MG RECORDS and ESTRUENDOSO RECORDS, as also, a compilation will be released soon, it was recorded on October of 2015, 16 bands were invited to participate, each band had 2:40 to record a live song but in that time we recorded 3 songs. Most bands are hardcore, crust and very heavy bands, so we are really looking forward for it.
Thank you very much for your interest in our band.
