Let’s start with your latest recording. When you look back at it now what kind of feelings do you have for it?
Nefass : We are very excited with this release, The creation process of the tracks and the recording sessions were very natural and organic. We took the necessary time to make each song grow and reach to the right point of ripeness ( a few rehearsals for some of them such as “Secrets of the Revenants” and literally years for others as “Cult of the Carnal Disarray”).
I am fascinated by band names. What was it that made you settle on the one you have and what does it mean to you?
Nefass : the band was ready to perform live back in 2007 and we didn’t have a name yet. Actually we had a lot of different ideas and combinations but none really convinced us and changing from rehearsal to rehearsal. “Dying Eclipse” or “Thy Tempest” were some of the first choices but I can’t remember how we finished with “Mortuorial”( a not existing word but very graphic). The final choice evokes the death as an ecliptic restless cycle beyond human wisdom.
What does it mean to you that there are people out there that actually appreciate and look forward to what you are doing?
Nefass : Our music is what we have, we appreciate and value it over all and that’s what some people discovered and feel identified with. The support we receive is brutal and in some moments was the key to go ahead .Extreme Metal is totally not popular in South America and is very hard to survive and “go out” this make us strong and very close to fans of the genre.
How important is image to the band? What impression do you want the fans to get of the band?
Nefass : Incarnate our music is what we do. The ritual starts before every show and finish once we turn back into “people”. We want to abduct the audience with an integral propose of Music / Image and leave a complete sensation of the proposal.
I am a huge fan of LP art work. How important is it to have the right art work for your album?
Nefass : It´s the “Face”. We are huge fans too and in this case we found it before the album was finished. The great Matt Lombard is one of those genius that are constantly creating and developing new styles and technics with mesmerizing results, when I came across his “Crowley 1875AD” ( Original name of the CD Cover ) I knew it was the right “face” for what we were creating.
We live in a superficial world today where you don’t exist if you are not on Youtube and Facebook. Has social media been only beneficial in socializing with the fans or is there a down side to it too?
Nefass : Totally! Since the “My Space Era” we reached to a lot of people that otherwise would never know about us. Have been born in the end of the world make for us very difficult to get into the European and North American scenes but let us reach to places where bands of our genre rarely play.
When you play in a band does it feel like you are a part of a massive community? That you belong to something that gives meaning to your life?
Nefass : I don’t do this because it´s “Great ”or “Cool”, neither to “Belong”. We just can not stop, It´s a stigma we carry on every day, an obsession somehow, an addiction that make us weak and strong at the same time. Nothing give us the same.
When you are in the middle of it do you notice what state our beloved music scene is in? Is the scene healthy or does it suffer from some ailment?
Nefass : Cancer, There are a lot of people in the scene that are real cancer, parasites that try to live and take advantage of the bands and fans that really love and feel Extreme Metal. Original prevails and truth lives longer at the end. Time will make them fall.
How much of a touring band are you guys? How hard is it to get gigs outside of your borders?
Nefass : Every time I create a song I imagine it being performed over stage, if it’s not working in this mental recreation I will not keep working on it. Tour is the moment when everything makes scenes, I mean, every rehearsal , every recording session , every cent spent and sacrifice done. Gigs outside the borders were a dream some years ago and something we are constantly working now , this make us very proud and keep us motivated.
What will the future bring?
Nefass : We are constantly moving forward, it can be translated as more music, more tours, more videos and a constant effort to overcame and reinvent us all time. Hopefully we will make a world tour to deliver URUSHDAUR as far as we can, we will start by the end of this year and we expect visit Europe after next year summer.
