I don’t know how many bands you can pick from northern Africa. I can’t even pick a handful. But that doesn’t hinder NAWATHER from existing. Interview answers by Raouf Jelassi, vocalist and lyricist. Anders Ekdahl ©2016

What is this band really all about?
-This band is about our love for creating and playing music.
Nawather is an Oriental Metal band from Tunisia. Formed in 2013 by Raouf Jelassi (Occulta, Agony’s serenades) and Hichem Ben Amara (Occulta, Melmoth, Out Body Experience, Agony’s serenades) and has been joined by Ryma vocals, Yazid (ex Melmoth) on guitar , Saif (ex Myrath) drums and Nidhal Jaoua: Qanun
In 2014 we started the record of our first album ”Wasted years ”
In the 1st of may 2015 we finished mixing and mastering the album ”Wasted years”.
And in october 2015 we signed a deal with the label M & O music for promotion and distribution .

Is there a difference in people’s attitude towards you if you don’t come from a cool place like LA or NY or London?
-‘Til now we didn’t have this problem . We don’t really get a reaction as to where we are from .

When you release an album that get pretty good reviews how do you follow up on that?
-It’s always great to get positive feedback , it show us that we are on a good way.

What is the biggest challenge in the creation of an album, to write the songs or to come up with really good songs?
-Writing songs are not a real challenge for us since they come out from deep feelings. However to come up with a good song we have to follow various steps in a perfect way that may satisfy the largest number (as many numbers as possible)of our fans .

Do you prefer working digitally or is physical still cooler?
-We prefer to work with both format physical and digital. Physical CDs are definitely still important. Having a physical copy to sell at shows gives your fans a tangible way of connecting to your music.

With a sound that is being described as both this and that by fans how do you view your sound?
-Nawather is an oriental Metal band .Our music is based from our origins which are not totally oriental, it’s inspired from our traditional Maghreb-Arab-Berber music

How important are the lyrics and what message do you want to purvey?
-The lyrics of the album turns around the wasted time as the name refers.
Once time pass and we feel we grew old without realizing our dreams.
Hope push us to react, to move, to change the reality of things in order to recapitulate the wasted time.
Or to make up the wasted time
Wasted years was around that, except the track” kont trab ”which is about the war and the terrorism that attacked so many countries.

What part does art work for album covers play in the world of the band?
-The artwork of the album is the perfect reflection of the concept of the album.

When you play live do you notice a degree of greater recognition from the fans with each new time you pass through town?
-Yes for sure, the more you will play in one town, the more people will sing your songs .

What do you see in the future?
-Good things we hope ! Working on dates for summer and the end of 2016. Also a new video will be released pretty soon .
