If you like viking metal like Falkenbach you will like NEBELHORN. Back with a 4th album I had to interview the man behind the name. Anders Ekdahl ©2018
Let’s start with your latest recording. When you look back at it now what kind of feelings do you have for it?
-To be honest, it first felt like some kind of hatelove…Love, because I´ve spent so much good times and went through good, inspiring moods while composing and texting it. I knew and felt: „Yes! That is what my life is about… music and creativity! I always wanted to share this passion and want the listeners to take part of this intense, passionate, streightgiving emotions!“ Hate, because it took so much time and nerves to raise the funds for production and recording wich made me so negative/agressive that all got stuck just because of the constant lack of money…The passion to bring this album to live at all costs took lots of streight and even ended up with the end of my relationship… But now, several weeks after and even sometimes during the recording, I felt it was the right and only way…
I am fascinated by band names. What was it that made you settle on the one you have and what does it mean to you?
-The idea of the bandname Nebelhorn was to create an enchanted item, such as the Tyrfing for example. I explained it on an example in the lyrics of „das Nebelhorn“ on the gen Helwegs Grund Album. Roughly explained, the bandname „Nebelhorn“ intends to be a warning/alarming sign to the honest and the exposer of dark deeds.
What does it mean to you that there are people out there that actually appreciate and look forward to what you are doing?
-It really means a lot and also inspires me, also gives the good mood for the new ideas. To me its the „second income of the artist“ I am always very thankful and happy, when someone gives feedback and shares it with others!
How important is image to the band? What impression do you want the fans to get of the band?
-A true, honest and reliable one of corse! This is very important to me! But it´s more important to me that they just like and appreciate the music and the whole art around it.
I am a huge fan of LP art work. How important is it to have the right art work for your album?
-In this matter, we ´ve got something in common! As I mentioned above, the whole process, composing, texting, arranging is pure emotion and every album should reflect this as a whole, acoustic and also visible.
To me, this is a point what single track downloads can´t really transport, but that´s just my opinion.
We live in a superficial world today where you don’t exist if you are not on Youtube and Facebook. Has social media been only beneficial in socializing with the fans or is there a down side to it too?
-From my point of view, the positive side depending social media is the freedom to choose how you want to promote yourself and the possibility to express yourself much wider than it was possible with the print media. Also I think its really great to chat wit the listeners personnally if they have any questions, ideas or requests I am enjoying it very much!
The downside is clearly the illegal download wich makes it hard to survive as a Soloartist. Also the big music industry which is capable of running wide spread commercial and promotional campaigns for „their flagships“ to catch the listeners attention much earlier than independend musicians could ever do.
When you play in a band does it feel like you are a part of a massive community? That you belong to something that gives meaning to your life?
-As a soloartist, not in the usual way. During the recording sessions with the guestmusicians, yes! It simply feels great! The music as a whole gives meaning to my live, also I am living what I want and have to say through the music! Also the constructive feedback and good chats with the listeners are making me happy!
When you are in the middle of it do you notice what state our beloved music scene is in? Is the scene healthy or does it suffer from some ailment?
– To me it feels like times were better at the very start of it, more passionate and selfinterested listeners, more sharing, more caring, more fun at all and more focused, based on the music… In my opinion, it feels like drinking and being drunk together while the music plays during conversations, live or not, is the mayor „state of the art“ for most of the listeners today. Guys and girls with thorshammers and drinkinghorns leaving tons of waste on the open plain after leaving the Festivalsite where the artists sung about nature, environment and the „good spirit“…For me its sad to see that the essential message seems to loose grip, pagan and vikingmetal wants/wanted to transport. But thats just my personal point of view.
What will the future bring?
-At the Moment I am more than happy that „Urgewalt“ finally made it out! Whatever future brings, it also depends on the listener and his support! New shirts? New album? Enough ideas are there but permanent hard struggle for income to finance the recordings, production and other stuff shrinks the passion for doing it with fun…Walls, walls, walls… Since the beginning of Nebelhorn this was an essential part of the whole project…true independence! Honestly composed, streightgiving music with a lot of emotion and deep thoughts packed into intense lyrics… Far away from the financial oriented „you have to deliver“ deals of the big labels. If there is an Idea that feels good to me, I´ll do it with joy, passion and heartblood you can hear! All is possible with the deep relation to the listeners! Timepressure and all this negative influences away from the music and art almost made me mad in this so called „real, hard world“. I am not willing to follow this hasty, heartless competitionshit celebrated by most of the people out there! Also it´s hard for me to understand the paradoxon of most of the listeners: …“Consuming? yes shure! Nice Stuff! More of it!…But…Money for realization of the music? Ah…come on, sorry, but it´s YOUR hobby!“ Shure there are others but they are very few… (Thank you very much for your part!!! You made all this possible!!!) So share and care, or it will be gone. This fits on Nebelhorn as also on any other independent art, music or whatever Project out there… You´ll get what you support!
Thanks for all and enjoy the music!
