ODRADEK ROOM

Another really cool Ukraine metal band that mixes doom and progressive to create a marvelous painting. ODRADEK ROOM Anders Ekdahl ©2017

We live in a world where there are literally millions of bands to check out. What do you have that sets you apart?
-It seems to me that it is music itself, that sets us apart. I believe our music is unique and lies beyond usual musical genre cliches. It is sincere.

How hard was it for you guys to pick a name? What had that name have to have to fit your music?
-Hard? I don’t remember. The name reflects a sphere of inconceivable. Something, that seems irrational at first glance.

What band(s) was it that turned you on to the kind of music you play? What inspires you today?
-Pink Floyd and Anathema gave me the initial push to make music. Nowadays 90 % of time I don’t listen to heavy music. I like ECM jazz and different kinds of unusual music. Usually it’s hard to define stylistically. Saltillo, Devin Townsend, Cocorosie as an example of unconventional approach to music. However, my band-mates may have very different tastes. I speak only for myself.

What is the advantages/disadvantages of CD and vinyl these days of internet promotion where digital seems to be king?
– CD’s have turned into more of a fetish and purely collectable stuff.

I use Spotify and Deezer but only as compliment to buying CDS (it’s easier to just have your phone or pad when your out) but I fear that soon music as we know it will be dead and buried. What are your worries as a band?
-Hard to say. Yes, times change. More bands appear, relative amount of bands worth any attention decreases. Digital technologies… Everything changes and I don’t know where it leads. But I don’t worry about this and do what I think is necessary.

What part does art work and lay out play? Any message that you want to bring forth with it? *
-We tried to make artwork as a fully realized idea of this album. The head of a doll in hand is like a personality, but an incomplete one. Booklet pages reflect a ___ travel of a man (abstract individual) during his lifetime. Water is always in the background as a symbol of
unconscious. Watercolor drawing depicts emotional affects. In the end frozen sea and a ghost of blooming tree give you choice: whether to realize and become happy recognizing the absence of your own self or hold onto it and wither, going back to the cycle.

Is it a whole different way to promote a band today with all these social media channels? Or do you go about doing promotion the same way? Playing live and word of mouth.
-One way or another. To be honest, even though I am an entrepreneur, I’m not that good when it comes to promoting music. Perhaps this question should be adressed to Nick, the owner of Hypnotic Dirge Records.

Do you feel like you are a part of a scene, locally, nationally and internationally?
-It’s hard to even say if you are a part of society, not to mention such abstract concepts like ‘scene’. A part of Ukrainian scene, international scene… maybe.

How much of a touring band are you? Is touring/gigging still a great way of spreading the word of the band?
-Yes, this is a great way to share our energy and feelings we put into music. However we don’t play live very often. We take part in really interesting events like Doom Over Kiev Fest with Saturnus, Shape of Despair and so on, but ofter ignore local gigs. We understand, that not everyone needs our music, but when we do find an opportunity to play for our audience we do it with joy.

What will the future bring?
-Lol. Nothing new. Has anything changed in this world for the last few thousand years?
