If you are like me and being late in discovering OTARGOS you should read this interview and then go out and buy their releases. Anders Ekdahl ©2016

As I am not at all familiar with your band perhaps you could introduce it?
-OTARGOS was born 15 years ago, playing at the begining a kind of classical raw black metal. The band released during 2016 a new album, the 6th, entitled XENO-KAOS. Since many years OTARGOS is more focused on a modern death/black style inspired by cosmologie, SciFi and W40K universe.

How hard was it for you guys to pick a name? What had that name have to have to fit your music?
-Actually we wanted to something sounding diferent, that’s why we didn’t use an english word. OTARGOS comes from an ancient greek word meaning “the goat” … as I said at the begining we were just inspired by classical BM…. “the goat” is linked to the demonic imagery.
Of course this word doesn’t fit to our music anymore, but we keep it anyway.

What band(s) was it that turned you on to the kind of music you play? What inspires you today?
-We started when bands such as Dark Funeral, Marduk, Behemoth, Setherial emerged… for sure they inspired us and gave us the tatse of BM, But during the years we found our propre style and take away from the classical genre more and more, musicaly, philosophically and lyricaly. nowaday… these band don’t inspire us anymore, we draw now inspirations more from SF soundtracks and old deathmetal bands.
Thah’s why now we consider OTARGOS as a “dark extreme metal” band.

What is the advantages/disadvantages of CD and vinyl these days of internet promotion where digital seems to be king?
-Even if Digital rules… you can’t go without CD, it remains important. For exemple when you play live, the audience still interested whith merchandise stuff and CD’s or vinyls. The advantages still the same: to possess a physical item, a thing you can touch and behold or put within your collection…

I use Spotify and Deezer but only as compliment to buying CDS (it’s easier to just have your phone or pad when your out) but I fear that soon music as we know it will be dead and buried. What are your worries as a band?
-it’s sure… now the audience care less and less about bands and universe around a band. Music is becoming just a file lost within thousands other files… the concept of “album” is also dying. It’s very very sad, only music lovers still take care and attention of what a band really offers.

What part does art work and lay out play? Any message that you want to bring forth with it?
-This is a important part, it give a material imagery to your music,it give the music a landscape… a background in vue to immerse the listener in the band universe. When you buy a CD (…if you still continue to buy ones…) this is the first thing you see, the artwork.
OTARGOS’s universe is based on cosmic battlefields, cataclysmic onslaughts between futuristic or lost civilisations across the universe… we work on our artworks in the same way.

Is it a whole different way to promote a band today with all these social media channels? Or do you go about doing promotion the same way? Playing live and word of mouth.
-Both are important, in the past we used posters on city walls a lot… now those walls are digital. BUT in the other hand anyone can promote anything… so it’s easy to be drowned, this is a dilemma.
So, you can’t go without digital promotion in those days, but it still essential to play live. Concert and venue can’t be download…. not yet!!

Do you feel like you are a part of a scene, locally, nationally and internationally?
-Of course, we are a part of the death/black scene… I don’t really undertsand the meaning of your question.

How much of a touring band are you? Is touring/gigging still a great way of spreading the word of the band?
-Yes, we try to be on stage as often as possible, it’s really important for promotion and of course cause we love that! Playing live is I think the first reason why we are in a band.

What will the future bring?
-we are finishing “XENO-KAOS” promotion, but some shows still to come.
We are starting to think about the next release …
