POSSESSED are BACK. With a new album, the first ones in something like 30 years this is the truly X-mas come early. Answers by Emilio Marquez/Drums. Anders Ekdahl ©2018
What kind of vision did you have for this new album and how do you feel the result matches that vision?
-Some songs reminds me of horror movies in which a vision of total devastation caused my man backed by supernatural forces.
It’s that hypnotic. I hope the fans will feel it as I do. So many metal fans love horror films and this album will take you there.
I hope it takes us to the next level.
Does location mean anything today? We used to hear about how it was all location, location, location back in the days if you wanted to make it big? That you had to come from a certain place to be sure to make it.
-Location has really helped me. If I lived anywhere else I don’t think the HEAVY METAL GODS would have introduced me to Jeff.
Jeff & I are from California. That helped.
But at the end it’s about talent So hard work always pays off no matter where your from.
What is it like to be a in a band and to get to tour all over the world? What kind of feelings do that bring about?
-I’m so lucky and proud to finally have this album come out after so long.
To be a part of the legacy of Possessed is amazing. Nothing is better than playing for the fans & the scenes around the world. Sounds silly but I usually tell Jeff right after we get off stage,
“Thanks again brother from still keeping me on drums”!
What kind of feedback have you had on your music, your latest album and in general? How important is feedback?
-It’s been very positive. Even some of my closet friends who give me great criticism tell me it sounds like old Possessed. That was #1 priority going into new material. Had to have that old school Possessed feel so when you close your eyes you think true Brutal Death Metal where the originals left off. Jeff’s vocals are amazing.
How do you know that you have written a “hit” song? Is there a particular feeling you get when you know that this is the one, this is the big “make it song”?
-When we write a song every riff has to be approved by the band meaning we all have to be into it.
Why settle for a whatever riff. It should feel natural. Plus these guys are very talented so the chemistry is sick. I truly feel every song on this album is rememberable and unique.
As I am no musician I will never got to know the difference of analogue and digital. Can you explain the difference to me? what are the pros and cons of analogue V/S digital?
-Analog usually has more of a bottom end deep sound. Example would be Van Halen’s Women and Children first album. But now with modern recording equipment you can get a Analog sound if the sound person knows what’s their doing.
Digital sound is compressed and clean with a Thinner sound. Sick sounding but not like that old school fat vinyl sound.
Cons with analog it’s too expensive. Harder to edit by cutting & pasting tape vs Digital so easier to edit. Especially if you record to a click which I love too.
What is it like to have people you never met liking your music and singing along to it at gigs?
-When the fans are singing along to the lyrics is a special feeling. It’s like a brother & sisterhood relationship that only True MetalHeads share. The heavy riffs with brutal drums all synchronized with Jeff’s vocals. Priceless.
How important are lyrics to you guys? Do you have any messages that you want to get forward?
-All lyrics are from Jeff so his style is poetic with a raw bite to it. When you hear his voice you know its him. The lyrics are true in nature meaning can be on real Life & Death experiences. Some songs can be Supernatural and fictional but inspired by fact based occurrences. I always felt great lyrics come from crazy times which we are currently living. No hidden messages just straight out horrorific
I love a really cool cover but I get the feeling that today with all this digital uploading/downloading people aren’t that concerned about artwork. How do you feel?
-We saw many drawings. Some were great but this one fit best for Revolutions of Oblivion.
The artwork cover is very Original, Dark and Symbolic with these Songs. We all know this is the one. Yes, artwork that fits each band is really important. I love to see huge props and great productions behind great live bands.
Hopefully 1 day we have the budget to pull that off. It’s a lot of money and hard work. A great crew also helps.
What does the future hold?
-Future holds Touring to support this album, Hard Work, Love for family and friends/bands great health & more albums. This is what we do so we’ll Play Till Death arrives.
