Check out this interview I did with PRISMERIA. Anders Ekdahl ©2019
How hard was it to come up with a band name and how does the name fit the music?
-The hardest thing was to find a name that fit our universe and philosophy.
“Prismeria” is a name with the word “prisme” in the root of the name. The prisme is an object that separate the light into all its components. We symbolize the light as the band made of different influences (the components) and we also symbolize the light as a song made of different kind of metal music (the components). The “prisme” is the link between each other and the genesis of our music.
What was it that made you want to be in a band in the first place?
-The band started by the meeting in 2013 of Leny and Benjamin, the two guitarist in that originally wanted to form a Thrash metal band. After trying with no success to find good musicians, we met Nicolas (Drums) and Lucas (Bass and Vocals) in December 2016 with who we started composing. After the departure of Lucas, we met Cyril (vocals) and Alexandre (Bass) during the summer 2017. Prismeria was officially born in September 2017 with this full line up. We understood that playing only one kind of metal was not something very quirky. There are so many bands in each style which practice well their matter since so much time. We want to try to do something else. Of course we know that it’s almost impossible to create something new today. We just want to try and see. Maybe someday we will find something.
As I am no musician I have no idea how it works, but how do you make your own music based on what influences you? What parts do you pick?
-It’s very difficult to put a genre or artists on Prismeria style and this is what we want..
We take inspirations from Thrash, Death and Core music. We are all influenced by the old and the modern metal. We are the children’s of 50 years of metal and we make or own food with that.
When you are in a band does it feel like you are a part of a worldwide movement?
-For the moment at our level we don’t feel especially as a part of a worldwide movement. We don’t met a big family, friendly and joyful. However we have encountered lots of other bands, people of the world music, and have spend very goods moments with them. It’s more like meeting comrades, co-workers at a crossroad.
How important is it that you look the part in promo shots and stuff? How important is the graphic side of the band?
-The graphic side of the band is major for us. The visual is the first contact before hearing the sound on youtube or on stage. So we developed one which suits us. We will not discuss our graphic sides : we will let the people think by themself without any guide. But yes it’s important and we take care of it. As we do for promo shots too.
What would you say influences your lyrics? How important are they?
-We just look around, the world we live in today and took what affects us most closely in a positive or negative way. In this EP, social violence, drugs or war were the main topics. So rather negative stuff here haha ^^ It will change for sure.
For our part lyrics are very essential. Why ? Because we don’t give our opinion during a song. We just tell stories or present a statement of facts. Sometimes in a brutal way but always with the aim of making people thinking about it, freely, as much as possible (a statement of facts is never objective). Thinking for oneself first and foremost.
Is the album as relevant today as it was in the 70s and 80s? Is digital killing the album?
-It depends on what you focus on and what you want to do : do you want to create an artistic message ? Which one ? With what ? Do you care about selling ? The number of view on youtube ? Do you want to touch somebody or you don’t care etc….For our part we think that is important to build and create our musical world and, for us, an album is a good way to do it : differents songs, thematics, kind of music, the artwork, a set of lyrics etc….
But it’s not enough we like the official video approach, live video etc…We are not close-minded. We like the different conception of making music and we will test them in our manner.
Where will the future of format end – digital verses physical verses whatever?
-We would say that today the world turns fast, certainly too fast. In our brain, in our moves and in our lives. We don’t really know if people take the time to listen a full album today or if they just listen random playlist. For our part we do what we want and what we like.
Maybe in 10 years there will just be official video. 3 or 4 per year per bands or maybe very less artists than today ! We heard about the development of IA which are able to create new metal music live. Like Metal creation in a live boradcats all day long with an infinite range of possible. This could lead to the disparition of lots of artists. We hope that will never happen : the substitution of men by machines in the field of art.
For us, the most important is live music. The fuel of music is in there.
How much of a touring entity are you guys? What is a live experience with you like?
-Now, we are only the 5 of us. We like to discover new crowd, new concert hall with all of the technicians of the place. We like to talk with them, share theirs views, to find out the place where they live.
The live is the most important for us. We want to share the maximum with the people (crowd and technicians) : energy, smile, the feeling of being well here with us ! We want to give a perfect show as well as possible so we prepare every one of it very methodically, focusing on every aspect and trying to be the more professional as possible.
What lies in the future?
-We are finishing composing our very first album. We are very proud of the EP we released in October 2018 and we want to push our universe forward. We’re going to enter in studio in July. Of course, music video recording, touring and promotion of the album will fall il the next months.
