RUTHLESS is a classic band from the 80s that you should be somewhat familiar with if you were around in those days. If not this interview might shed some light on them. Questions answered by

Do you feel that you have come as far as you planned for the band now that you have a new album out?
-Well….This is the farthest this band has gone…back in the 80’s we never left California to play other shows. so, ya…the new album has helped us reach new fans as well as the old fans. We have done 3 European festivals “Up The Hammers” Festival In Athens Greece, “Head bangers Open Air” Germany & “Keep It True Festival in Germany….and have more in the works, and more shows across the U.S. I feel that we have surpassed what we have done in the past. We did not really know how far this new album would take us. I feel that we have surpassed our Goals for the band. We have a lot more to do.

How does this new album compare to the previous ones?
-The newest album ‘They Rise” is where we left off…just pure Ruthless style Metal!! I would not compare it with the old albums though. this is a whole new line up with a great energy. its in the Relm of old Ruthless…We wanted to stay true in our writing process. We really did not try to be anything more than what we had done in the past.

Was it hard for you to come up with a sound for this album that you all could agree on?
-No. These new songs just came out naturally. We wrote 9 new songs in 6 months. everyone in the band contributed on the writing. The chemistry we have now is the best ever. When we were writing we could just feel it, We all agreed that these new songs were great songs. We did had time restraints due to Bill Metoyer’s (producer/engineer) Schedule. So, we had some pressure to get in the studio and record the new album. But, we feel we did a very good sounding album in a short time with this current line up.

How important are the lyrics to you? What kind of topics do you deal with?
-Sammy writes the lyrics…he writes about the world, & what’s going in the world.. Politics, War, Hatred…Ya know Metal type lyrics.. Sammy handles writing all lyrics and we will help with melodies and arrangements.

How important is the cover art work for you? How much do you decide in choosing art work?
– Album Cover art work is important, I remember back when Iron Maidens Album “KILLERS” came out.. that cover made me buy that album. We have a guy Dimitar Nikolov who did the ” They Rise” Cover. He took our old cover ideas from “Discipline of Steel” & “Metal Without Mercy” Album’s. Cover art is very important to all of us.

Where outside of your country do you feel you have had the best response so far?.
-Europe is a great Metal Place. The crowds in Europe are amazing!!! We have seen fans from all over the world showing up to these festivals, They are bringing our old albums and our new album to the shows for us to sign them. We are blown away by this. the crowds are singing every song. EU Festivals have been the best shows so far!

Why is it that we do not see more bands from your country making it big internationally?
-Because Here in the U.S. It’s very difficult to get people out to clubs to see bands. …the scene here is very weak. we used to be huge in metal. but no radio supports it much now. music has been diluted…internet has changed everything . It’s a whole new world in the music industry. This is a tough time for bands.
I Have not seen any bands making it big anywhere. Record labels are not getting behind Metal bands at this time. Very Few…We will see what the future holds. Things will evolve eventually I believe.

What is your local scene like? What status does does your band have in the national metal scene?
-Our local scene is just average. a lot of local bands just don’t have a chance anymore, unless you have a lot of money and great management. most local bands pay to play here. which is ridiculous…no record company’s don’t go out to see shows anymore. its a all digital computer world with no human touch anymore. sad!! Ruthless is just starting to do shows nationally. So, our status is still not Known. We are heading to Wisconsin, New York & Texas this year. We will see what the future holds for us.

What kind of reaction have you had nationally/internationally so far?
-OUR RESPONSE HAS BEEN GREAT!! Old fans & new fans are showing up at our shows. nationally its been just OK so far. but in Europe its been incredible!
We are just getting started again. We are gonna just keep playing as many shows that we possibly can, to get our name back out there. we are currently working on a new album that should be out in 2017. We will see where it takes us!

What does the future hold for you?
-New album in the works. lots of shows lined up in then U.S. We just wanna keep the Ruthless train Rolling and have fun with this… I feel that if you are having fun, that’s the most important thing. when its not fun anymore… that’s when its time to hang it up. we will see what the future holds.
Great new line up with Dave Watson on Guitar, Marc Mcgee on Bass and Jason Van Slyke on Drums. We are heading to uncharted waters. The new songs we are writing are a bit heavier than previous music. We want to make this next album the heaviest best album to date. We are taking our time in the writing process and in the recording process. I Believe that the future is looking good.
