SCALA MERCALLI

Whenever I see the first part of this band’s name I come to think of the world famous Scala opera. But SCALA MERCALLI are no classical band. Perhaps a future classic band. Anders Ekdahl ©2017

Do you notice that there is an anticipation for you to release an album? Have you built a large enough following for people to eagerly await a new album?
(Sergio) We are already writing new songs for a new album because we have had a really good acceptance from the public for “New Rebirth”, both for the music and the historical subject we talked about. That’s why we hope to release a new album in 2018!

Is it important for you that a new album picks up where the previous left off? How important is continuity??
(Sergio) Our new album will treat some subjects already found in the previous, because we believe it is important to have a certain stylistic continuity, but always with a bit of evolution, to give something new to the listener.
(Clemente) For me it’s important to continue and evolve the same idea one album after another.

Was it hard for you to come up with a sound for this album that you all could agree on?
(Sergio) We tried to work to the sound composition all together, to make the album as solid and powerful as possible, but in the end we also asked the opinion of our sound technician and manager Alex, who has a good experience on this matter.

How important are the lyrics to you? What kind of topics do you deal with?
(Sergio) Lyrics are really important to us, music united to the text must leave a clear message to the listener. In “New Rebirth” we introduced some current social themes, but most of all we talked about the history of Italian Risorgimento, because we believe it has a strong analogy with the present situation, with the political and economic crisis we are living, which has some analogies with the one in 1800. We hope we could awake in our listeners the energy to take position against this system.
(Giusy )In fact, often we start from the inspiration of the text to create the riffs and melodies! If we must summon strength, courage and power we have to think of battle sounds, to hearts that beat for the upcoming battle, and the expectation in the openings of the chorus finally give vent to the immense possibilities that are there when there’s union and perseverance .

How important is the cover art work for you? How much do you decide in choosing art work?
(Sergio) The artwork of the cover is also really important to us because it represents the message of the whole album, so we work a lot on it. In “New Rebirth”, the coat of arm on the cover is a remake of the coat of arm of the first Italian Kingdom, in a heavy metal style, It has been designed by our graphic designer Fabio Cucco, who rebuilt it and refined it with care. We always ask for his opinion before choosing the cover artwork because he is a real expert who cured all our official albums.

How important is having a label to back you up today when you can just release your music on any sort of platform online? Are there any negative consequences to music being too readily available to fans?
(Sergio) A good label is important for the promotional work, because it makes the band reach all possible channels, and not only for the distribution of the music. Online music has surely reduced the sales, but makes every song reach more easily every listener.
(Clemente) The work of the label for a band is very important, without it it’s more difficult to promote your music and your image. On-line you can find everything you want, that’s positive because it’s easier for the listener to find new music, but it’s negative for the musician beacause probably he won’t sell all the copies of it’s album.

I guess that today’s music climate makes it harder for a band to sell mega platinum. How do you tackle the fact that downloading has changed how people consume music?
(Sergio) Surely it is difficult to reach big numbers of sold albums for everyone nowadays because of free downloading, but we try to play live music as much as possible to stimulate the listeners to buy original cd or merchandising.
(Clemente ) Thats very sad, but nothing can stop the digital download. The only thing you can do it’s to play live and promote your music with a concert!

Does nationality matter today when it comes to breaking big. Does nationality play a part in if or not you will make it big internationally?
(Sergio) Nationality is not so important in metal world today, the passion for this music unites us beyond borders and this is the greatest power it has: uniting people regardless of nationality, religion or political beliefs.
But we also believe a band is more convincing if it tries to be itself and communicates its experiences tied to its homeland.
(Giusy )According to me it ‘s right that every band has something that draws its historical cultural policies origins! ‘Cause in a global world we must be careful where you go ok, but especially where you come from! I love the bands that speak of their country and have fingerprints and musically influences typical of their culture! According to me, ‘the musical diversity in the metal coloring, renews and strengthens the brotherhood! Be sincere metal!

I use Spotify and Deezer but only as compliment to buying CDS (it’s easier to just have your phone or pad when you’re out) but I fear that soon music as we know it will be dead and buried. What are your worries as a band?
(Sergio) Music in the future will not be the same as we have learned and lived it in the past, so we try to give our best now and we will slowly adjust to what will come. We remain sure that a good musician has to play first for himself and for the message he wants to give, a message that can help to improve oneself and the one who listens.
Our only concern about it is the possibility to see the number of bands decrease, with less choice and less possibility to make good music.
(Giusy )I personally really miss out going to the store CDs and star half days to look for them and try and then finally find something interesting and try it! Virtually you can have it all now! The live show still remain ‘always and only the best way to know a band and see if it moves! So forget about facebook and youtube in a while and go see live!

What does the future hold for you?
(Sergio) We are still promoting our album with various concerts, also using a new live scenic design, in fact we recently introduced an artillery cannon (loaded with blanks) that “shoots” on the public. We are scheduling also new concerts in Europe and we hope to reach your country too. Soon we will also release some making of for other videoclips we made, and in a short while a lyric video of our song “Last Leaf” will be out!
