SPITEFUEL might be on their second album by know but I just recently got to know of them. Stefan Zoerner (vocals) was kind enough to answer my questions. Anders Ekdahl ©2018
Let’s start with your latest recording. When you look back at it now what kind of feelings do you have for it?
-Hej da! Uhhh, well, we still are very proud and I feel very fine with „Second To None”. It was our first statement, it ist full of power, emotion and good tracks. And by the way, I still love the sound (Gernhart Studios) and artwork by mighty Travis Smith.
I am fascinated by band names. What was it that made you settle on the one you have and what does it mean to you?
-Hahaha, good question! Well, to stay with the truth, there is no „big mistery” or „great story” behind the name „SpiteFuel”… we like the word, the power behind, we are full of spite and loaed with fuel… and ok, I think, it sounds COOL!
What does it mean to you that there are people out there that actually appreciate and look forward to what you are doing?
-It is such an honor! It make me feel humble and it is a real STRONG motivator, too! There are followers, supporters and jah, FANS all over the world… and THIS ist so wonderful! To say it in the words of another singer: „Without you, we are nothing!”
How important is image to the band? What impression do you want the fans to get of the band?
-Okay… image. I think it IS important. For SpiteFuel there ist not just the high quality music, not just the metal power on stage, not just the „to be yourself”. It is also… show. Glitter. Entertainment. And jah, I know how „untrue” this might sounds, but we really want to entertain, not just play good songs. Let the fans make up their own mind. Like it or not… we do our best to rock you! ^^
I am a huge fan of LP art work. How important is it to have the right art work for your album?
-Me too! And so: Simple answer: VERY very very important. And again, we are very privileged to work with icons such as Travis Smith (Nevermore, Anathema…) and Kris Verwimp (Immortal, Suidakra….). Feast for the eyes, smile!
We live in a superficial world today where you don’t exist if you are not on Youtube and Facebook. Has social media been only beneficial in socializing with the fans or is there a down side to it too?
-In my view it ist a gift. A great tool to work with. The easy going connection worldwide is more than just helpful. It is essential. Be dilligent. Bust some balls. Be present. Every single fucking day! The only chance to be recognized!
When you play in a band does it feel like you are a part of a massive community? That you belong to something that gives meaning to your life?
-Of course, dear! Music is magic. Music is (in addition to love) the most powerful thing in the universe. And to be part (as musician or as listener!) of this miracle is… nearly overwhelming!
When you are in the middle of it do you notice what state our beloved music scene is in? Is the scene healthy or does it suffer from some ailment?
-I think it is some sort of tunnel vision, when you are deep inside this „rabbithole” called „Scene”. Of course, you listen to other bands, you follow their progressions or statements of retirement and business, but the focus is on your own band.
How much of a touring band are you guys? How hard is it to get gigs outside of your borders?
-We really LOVE to play, we are born to destroy the stages, man! We try to play as much as we can! But… hard to get the gigs, and it even gets harder year by year. So many good bands out there, puh! Hard business… but ne need to worry… will will do our fuckin´ best to play live and to show our ugly faces, hahaha!
What will the future bring?
-God only knows! I very much hope just good news, some more records from SpiteFuel, may great gigs and FUN, FUN, FUN! That´s what it´s all about: Be proud of the shit you love! Or in swedish: Var själv och var bra pa det! Rock on and träffas igen!
