STALLION

STALLION has that heavy metal ring to it. You immediately start thinking potent horses or muscle cars depending on who you are. Anders Ekdahl ©2017

Recently we’ve seen a revitalization of traditional heavy metal. Do you see yourself as a part of that movement? Or do you see yourself as a part of something else?
-It´s true there are a lot of new groups out there who do it the old school way but I guess we would have startet STALLION anyway even if we would have been on our own. We´ve all been listening to the music since we can think and that was the reason to form the band and not that there is some kind of a “new wave of traditional Heavy Metal” although it´s fun meeting people in the same age with the same passion out there. We enjoy that very much and we made a lot of good friends with other bands.

You seem to have charmed everybody and their mothers but what has all this praise meant in terms of building the band? Has the praise done anything concrete for the band like for example made you financial solid?
-It´s unbelievable that we have so much support from all around the world but it´s still a long long way to the point where we can make a living of what we do with our music. It´s still a small group of fans compared to other genres but dedicated as fuck and that´s worth all the trouble we have with a full time job and the band. Everything we earn from the music at the moment has to go straight back in the band, that´s the way it goes.

How hard was it for you guys to pick a name? What had that name have to have to fit your music? When you formed did you do so with the intent of knowing what to play or did you do so from the point of having a band name and then picking a sound? How did you settle on the name/sound combo?
-Äxxl (guitar) and me formed the band as a two man project so we definitely knew what the sound should be like even years before we finally formed STALLION. The sound should be wide ranged from Hard Rock Elements to Speed Metal to Thrash Parts cause these where the most important roots for us in the process of forming the band. So we where searching for a concise band name that expresses strength and ferocity at the same time. When it came to STALLION we instantly new it was the right name for us.

Everybody is influenced by certain things. What band(s) was it that turned you on to the kind of music you play? What inspires you today?
-In the beginning it was the Oldschool Bands like Running Wild, Accept, Scorpions, Warrant (Speed Metal), Sodom, Skull Fist and bands like that who inspired us to form the band. But since we can think we all have been fans of lots of different kinds of style even if you can´t here that in our music. That ranges from Punk Rock to Hardcore to Black Metal to Doom Metal to Hair Metal and even to Hip Hop just to name a few genres. There´s almost nothing we don´t listen to when we are on the road and we still love it to show each other music we haven´t been listening to yet. Everything despite right wing bullshit ist welcome, haha.

I believe that digital is killing the album format. People’s changing habit of how they listen to music will result in there being no albums. Is there anything good with releasing single tracks only?
-Puh, we don´t really have experience with that. We are all hunters and collectors so for us the album format still is a very important thing and at the moment I don´t think that we will ever change that. It starts with the music but also to hold an elaborate Cover Artwork in hands with all the lyrics and pictures inside is essential for us, it makes record a complete works, you know. Thank god the metal community is still up for it and appreciates things like that.

What part does art-work and lay-out play when you release new recordings? How do you best catch people’s attention?
-Like I just said it makes a record a complete works. I will never forget how exciting it was to have a new record when I was a kid and to listen to it with the booklet in my hands. The cover artwork and the pictures/lay-out of an album was always very important to me cause it carries the message of a band almost as much as the lyrics and it definitely belongs together. I guess it´s not about catching peoples attention but to express yourself as much as possible though a record is a big deal for us and I think if you have the right mixture of all components the people will pay more attention automatically.

Has social media re-written the rules on how to promote your music? Or do you go about doing promotion the same way?
-For us social media played a big part in promoting our stuff in the very beginning of STALLION and we couldn’t believe how wide our music was spread when we released our first demo tracks. When it comes to magazines and stuff like that you need to do it the usual promo way but for the direct contact to your fans Facebook and all the other channels is pretty good.

When you play in a band, does that make you feel like you are a part of a scene, of something bigger and grander?
-Well, since we´ve been part of the scene for so long it was a pure requirement to bring out our own music and let that also be part of what we call Heavy Metal so it´s for sure something that makes you proud but I don´t need to be a scene hero. Especially when it comes to ultimate trueness warriors who know fucking everything and judge everybody for how metal you are. that´s bullshit! I won´t ever deny my non metal preferences and everybody who don´t understand that can just fuck off.

How much of a touring band are you? Is touring/gigging still a great way of spreading the word of the band?
-We would love to tour much more and also to more places all around the world. We haven’t´been to Scandinavia yet and we definitely need to change that soon so please bring us over, haha. Playing live is the essence of mostly every good band and so we play as much shows as we can and that definitely helps spreading the word about your band especially if you do a lot of festivals. We love being on the road together and playing live shows, that´s our passion!

What will the future bring?
-I hope our music brings us to a lot of places all around the world we´ve never been before to meet all those crazy STALLION fans out there who made it fucking happen for us. And we would love to come to Scandinavia finally, that would be fucking awesome. We know we have a lot of fans there and we just can´t wait play for you guys!
thank you guys very much, hope to see you soon!
