Is the band name to be seen as some sort of comment on current affairs?
-MOST DEFINITELY. THE WORLD HAS CHANGED ECONOMICLY IN A VERY DRASTIC WAY IN
THE LAST FEW YEARS. WE ARE AT A WEAK POINT ALL OVER THE WORLD. THERE IS
WAR,TERROISM AND CORRUPTION EVERYWHERE MARK (CROSS) WAS LIVING IN GREECE AND EXPERIENCED JUST HOW TAINTED THINGS HAD GOT THERE. WE REFLECTED ON THE WARS IN AFGHANISTAN AND OTHER SERIOUS ISSUES. GOVERNMENTS LYING TO THEIR COUNTRIES ABOUT HOW THEY WERE STILL STRONG. SO GENERALLY WE FELT THAT WHEREVER WE ARE IN THE WORLD, THERE ARE SERIOUS ISSUES WITHOUT ANY RESOLUTIONS.
When you have members spread out all over the globe (well almost) how do you create a band feeling?
THAT WAS EASY. MYSELF AND MARK (CROSS) WERE ALREADY FIRM FRIENDS FROM
TOURING TOGETHER WITH FIREWIND AND EDEN’S CURSE.IAN(NASH) IS A CLOSE FRIEND
AND WE ALREADY KNEW WE HAD A CHEMISTRY. PONTUS EGBERG WAS SUCH A NICE GUY
AND WE STARTED GETTING TOGETHER IN ENGLAND SOCIALLY AND REALLY FELT A GREAT
CHEMISTRY IN THE REHEARSAL ROOM. THE FACT WE ARE ALL FANS OF CREATIVITY AND
SOCIALISING, MADE IT ALL THE MORE EASY TO PULL IN ONE DIRECTION. WE ARE
CONSTANTLY IN TOUCH WITH EACH OTHER AND ALSO VERY PROUD OF OUR CREATION!!
With what intention did TAINTED NATION come alive? What was it that you couldn’t do in all your bands that you can in this?
THERE WASN’T ONE SPECIFIC THING. FOR US, LIKE MANY MUSICIANS, WE CAN’T STOP
CREATIVITY. IT WAS MORE ABOUT ENJOYING WHAT WE WERE DOING, MORE THAN TRYING
TO DO THINGS WE COULDN’T IN OTHER BANDS. OUR GOAL WAS TO SET OUT TO MAKING
SOMETHING THAT WAS ORIGINAL AND FROM THE HEART.
How does the song writing process work? Is it a lot of sending files this way or that way? How do you find time to do this too?
-THE CORE OF THE SONGS WERE ALREADY WRITTEN BY MYSELF AND IAN NASH. DEMO’S
WERE FINE TUNED BY THE REST OF THE GUYS , AND IT WASN’T UNTIL THEY HAD PUT
THEIR INPUT IN, THAT THE WHOLE THING CAME ALIVE AND GREW HORNS. MY RESPECT
FOR ALL THESE GUYS IN ABILITY NEVER DOUBTED EXACTLY WHAT THEY ARE CAPABLE
OF. IT WAS GREAT HEARING BACK ALL THEIR IDEAS AND RECORDINGS. THERE WAS SOME
FILE TRANSFERING OF COURSE. MODERN TECHNOLOGY AND THE INTERNET IS A
When you aren’t tied down to your “day time job” is there a greater freedom in creation? How many corners have you not cut this time around?
-MUSICIANS ALWAYS MAKE TIME FOR MUSIC AND CREATIVITY. YOU WILL FIND NORMALLY
TO ACHIEVE WHAT YOU WANT, YOU CANNOT CUT CORNERS, OR AS A WRITER AND A
MUSICIAN , YOU WILL NEVER BE HAPPY OR FULFILLED. THERE IS ALWAYS TIME TO
REFLECT , BUT YOU HAVE TO BE HAPPY WITH WHAT YOU HAVE DONE TO GET TO THAT
POINT. AN EXAMPLE I CAN GIVE TO THIS, IS THAT AS A PRODUCER, THERE WAS SOMETHING I
WASN’T QUITE HAPPY WITH IN THE GUITAR TONE. I SPENT A LONG WHILE PUTTING
THINGS ON HOLD, UNTIL I FOUND WHAT I WANTED. MAYBE THE PUBLIC WOULD NOT HAVE
NOTICED…..BUT I SURE DID. FOR ME IT WAS TOTALLY WORTH GOING THAT EXTRA
How strong is AOR in 2013? What kind of audience is there for it? Men in their 40s/50s alone?
-I WOULDN’T CATAGORISE TAINTED NATION AS A.O.R MAYBE BECAUSE OF OUR
PREVIOUS BANDS, IT’S EASY TO PUT US INTO THAT PIGEON HOLE. WE HAVE A GOOD
EAR FOR MELODY BUT THAT’S WHERE IT STOPS. THE BAND HAS A MODERN SOUND.
MONSTER RIFFS WITH MELODY. AND WE BELIEVE THAT THIS WILL GO MUCH FURTHER
THAN APPEALING TO AN A.O.R CROWD. WE WOULD LIKE TO THINK WE CAN APPEAL TO
YOUNGER GENERATIONS AND STAND ALONGSIDE THE MORE SUCCESSFUL AND COMMERCIAL
BANDS SUCH AS BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE AND SO FORTH.
IN ANSWER TO YOUR ORIGINAL QUESTION, THERE IS A LARGE CORE OF 40 SOMETHINGS
WHO LIKE AOR, BUT THERE ARE YOUNGER GENERATIONS ALSO REALLY GETTING INTO
THAT KIND OF STUFF.
You cannot get back what has been but if you could would you like to see the 80s arena tours and the huge interest for the kind of music you play come back or is the price too high to pay for that era to re-surface?
-MOST DEFINATELY I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE STADIUM TOURS. BUT SADLY THE WORLD
HAS APPLIED TOO MUCH PRESSURE ON THE WORKING MAN TO BE ABLE TO AFFORD THESE
LUXURIES. IN THOSE TIMES, MUSIC WAS A WAY OF LIFE FOR MORE PEOPLE. NOW THE
SAME PEOPLE HAVE TO WORK LONGER HOURS FOR LESS MONEY AND THEY HAVE MORE
PRESSURE. VENUES ARE SMALLER BECAUSE BIGGER ONES DON’T SELL ENOUGH TICKETS.
BANDS DON’T GET PAID. EVEN FESTIVALS EXPECT BANDS TO PAY THEIR OWN WAY THESE
DAYS. THINGS HAVE CHANGED!
When you do something like this is it strictly a studio project? Would it be a crushed illusion to take it to the stage too?
-WE HAVE ALREADY BEEN ON TOUR WITH THE ELECTRIC BOYS AND DYNAZTY IN THE U.K

-SOMETHING DIFFERENT. SOMETHING MODERN WITH POWER, HOOKS AND MATURITY.
SOMETHING TO TURN UP LOUD IN THE CAR OR THE CLUB AND GO FUCKING CRAZY!!
Will there be future for TAINTED NATION?
-YES!! WE WANT TO TAKE TAINTED NATION TO THE MASSES!!
