The first time I heard TANTAL I totally fell in love with the music. Anders Ekdahl ©2018
How hard was it to come up with a band name and how does the name fit the music?
Dmitry Ignatiev (guitar, lyrics): The band’s name is always hard topic. Before we start call our band “Tantal” we went through different names, but in the end our second guitarist (at that time) brought existing title. And we really liked it, because it has a lot of cool meanings: Ancient God with the quite tragic destiny, the rare metal in the periodic table of the chemical elements, machine gun. But the first two meanings perfectly fit to all our ideas which we tried and still trying to impress: dark and depressive lyrics, to be not a trivial metal band, do something unique.
What was it that made you want to be in a band in the first place?
DI: As for me, at the very first place – I want to express myself, my thoughts through the music and lyrics for the band. I guess the same is for my colleagues – of course, the fame and wealth is good, but at first is your feelings and the way you express yourself.
As I am no musician I have no idea how it works, but how do you make your own music based on what influences you? What parts do you pick?
DI: Inspiration comes unexpected and from the different sources. For me it’s another music, usually. I always trying to listen to a new music, new albums, new genres to found out some new ideas which could develop my own ones, some guitar rifs, some beats, lyrics, melodies even mood. For some songs you have to be in the right mood, my favourite bands helps me to go deep inside this mood.
When you are in a band does it feel like you are a part of a worldwide movement?
DI: Honestly, never thought about that, but you are right – music is another planet where everyone knows each other and all these creative persons lives in another world.
How important is it that you look the part in promo shots and stuff? How important is the graphic side of the band?
DI: It’s always important to have a good promos, especially videos, promo-shots and you should try to do with the best quality. At now moment videos are even more important than cover artwork or photos, in my opinion. That is why we pay a lot of attention to film our gigs and do video clips.
But for me, as a metal fan at first, cover artwork is also important, that is why we still do booklets with dedicated pictures for each song.
What would you say influences your lyrics? How important are they?
DI: Drama movies, all what happens in my life (for the latest album “Ruin” I used only my life experience with all faults and losses). My lyrics are very personal, because, in my life, I do not show my disappointment or do not share my thoughts, fears or worries with anyone. The lyrics are my confessions.
Is the album as relevant today as it was in the 70s and 80s? Is digital killing the album?
DI: I think, if you are good artist you should have an album, not single or EP. Of course, you can’t do money on that, as it was decades ago, but the album shows your status as musician. Digital killed CD format, for sure, but now vinyl is back and it’s great! People buying physical released now on vinyl more than on CDs.
Where will the future of format end – digital verses physical verses whatever?
DI: I think CDs are more like promos now, just a souvenir now. As I told, I’m glad that vinyl is back and seems this format has got a new life, because even young people buy it. I don’t like digital format, but it’s very to use, so I prefer to have everything in digital to be able to listen to it everywhere, and I buy CDs or Vinyl only of my favourite bands.
How much of a touring entity are you guys? What is a live experience with you like?
DI: Last year we didn’t tour too much, because it’s impossible due to bad local management and we don’t want to lose the time going nowhere to the people who do not care of the band. That is why we started to do our own solo gigs in Moscow where we can monitor and rule everything. Last year we also shared the stage with Lacuna Coil at their Moscow gig, it was awesome and audience was really pleased.
What lies in the future?
DI: We are preparing new videos, new songs and by the end of this year, I hope, we will release new material in EP format. In the end of May we are going to play our very first acoustic show and in Autumn or Winter we will do electric concert to present our new material.
